find a shallow creek with a little current, (bout 10-20") take a flashlight at night and start lookin for them. when you fond them, wiggle you fingers in his face to keep his attention and with thwe other reach down and grab him on the back. keep a mesh sack with you and fill it up. we caught over 50 im about 45 minutes doin this on the sabine river in utopia last weekend. catfigh and bass love these little suckers! nothin like fresh fish and crawfish for dinner.

Ronnie, some of the biggest crawfish I've caught (and eaten) have come from southeast Texas down around Houston, Dayton and Liberty. The rice field crawfish are the most abundant (someone mentioned this already). I don't know if anyone on here watched the Dirty Job show that Mike Rowe did in Louisiana on crawfishing. That poor guy was in absolute misery. Not something I would want to do for a living! Let's see now... We have "Deadliest Catch" in the Bering Sea, "Lobster Men" in the Atlantic, and "Crawfish Folk" in Louisiana and Southeast Texas. Sounds like another Discover Channel show in the making!

There is no doubt that the pond fishing is much better than the swamp fishing. But for pond fishing, you have to own land or pay for sharecropping. The Achafalya Swamp is public water. The little brown ditch crawfish someone above was talking about is scary. No self respecting cajun would eat them.
That's why they call it fishing and not catching!

Years ago most of what we ate came from the ditches in Louisiana. Don't know about that self-respectin' cajun bit, but that's what we did. Course I wouldn't do it now. In case someone wants them, I have 6 of those cylindrical crawfish traps that are itchin' for a new home. 3 of 'em were used once, the other 3, never even seen the water. Anybody want 'em? Free to a good home if u can pick 'em up!

There isn't much when it comes to food choices and "self respecting" in cajun country. That being said, the crawfish farmer I worked for special ordered his crawfish and hated having any of the small ditch ones. He was very particular, but his did taste great.

I used to catch crawdads as a kid. I got them from the local creek. I brought all the varmits I caught home, and had a mini zoo out in the backyard. It was all good until one summer somehow the little buggers all got out, and ran out on the grass and died in the heat. My mom was furious...lol. I had lizards, frogs, tadpoles, snapping turtle...like I said, a mini zoo...lol. (She made us take the snapping turtle back though, he was huge) Kids nowadays miss out on all that kind of fun. Now all they know is Nintendo, and computer games etc... they don't know what they are missing out on. We kept busy as kids, and left at daylight, came in by dark. Nowadays it is not safe to turn kids loose like that anymore, sadly.

I'll never forget the time I was dove hunting in Rockwall a few years ago. It was mid Sept and I was out in the middle of farm areas with dirt roads and dirt fields like black gumbo. Got caught in the mother of all storms which dropped at least 2"+ rain on us in less than 30 mins. The ditches all of a sudden came alive with crawdads, coming out of holes in the ditches by the dozen. Not sure if it was just the rain or if the rain trigger their mating time but it was a crawdad festival for sure. Other than the rain, no water anywhere near these roads and ditches.
