So what it's a rough fish! "I love 'em." It pumps me up when they initially slam the rod and I like the way they always look like they're frowning. I'm new here and live in the Austin area. So my question is: I would like to catch my favorite fish and wanted to know if any of you other rough fishermen have caught them here and on what?

Dunno 'bout Austin cause I've never fished there. If you want to get into some good Drum, go to Choke Canyon outside of San Antonio. Fished at Calliham on Coke Canyon about this time last year and caught many 10+ drum. We were using worms and also hooked into a few cats and a few carp as well. It's the only lake i can think of where TPWD fishing reports actually say anything about drum- "Water clear; 67 degrees; 6.10' low. Black bass are good on spinnerbaits and heavy jigs in grass. White bass are good on minnows and jigs. Crappie are fair on minnows. Drum are slow. Channel and blue catfish are good on stinkbait and live perch. Yellow catfish are slow."
I'm with you as I also enjoy catching drum. The larger size drum fight admirably....

Yep, catch a mess of 'em every spring and summer fishing for cats with shad on bottom in shallow water. Here's last years biggest drum.

Saw one caught out of Lake Austin (Emma Long Park) back in February; went 21 pounds as I recall.

Drum, "GasperGoo", love small crawfish you can usually catch in area ditches that always hold water. A few bait houses sell them or can tell you where to go buy them. They like the small white ones that are about 2 inches long. They also like worms. We used to catch a lot of them at Nails Creek Park on Lake Somerville right where the creek enters the lake.

My biggest this year 21 lbs 10 oz from lake Austin while carp fishing They are spotty in lake Austin, however, Travis is full them in the 3-10lb range. I typically catch them on crawfish, worms, or veggies on a hair rig back in the coves in around 15ft of water this time of the year.

Yep crawfish. Shad would be a second choice.
Also, be advised that small (around 2.5 lbs. and under) drum have beautiful, firm, white meat that is easy to work with on a grill/in the kitchen and very good to eat.

Always caught mine on shad and minnows. I hooked up on a biggun one time crappie fishing. I think he was about 18-20 inches. I tell you that was a fight and a half on my UL rig that I was using. I thought I had a big LMB.
If I fished for money.........I'd be broke.

Lady Bird Lake has quite a few drum in it. I have seen a a lot of them while bowfishing there, especialy on the upper end of redbud island in the "cove" between the island and the dam.
