My Dad once told me "Doing the right thing is an all the time thing. Not just when people are looking." These are words that I will soon tell my 6 year old son.

I really havent ever caught but a handful of crappie, and that was during last summer, catching them over brushpiles.
What do you generally do when you catch a big female full of eggs about to spawn? Now I would put it back and let it spawn. So truthfully, what would you guys do?

I try to be as legal as the next guy, but I'm sure there have been times I mighta kept a 9.5 inch or one that I tried to stretch his lip to make it 10. Now if the guy has several 7,8,9 inchers thats one thing, but to bust him for a 9.5 I dont think is right. How many times have you caught a 9.5 and you knew he was gonna die if you threw him back. shoulg you throw him back or keep it and eat it. Are you so righteous, you never go 40 in a 35 mile zone, you always wear your seat belt, you always use your turn signal, you never run a yellow light. I'm all for game laws but I dont think I woulda called the law on him. Like I said if he had a stringer full of undersize , now thats a diffrent situation. Good point Snowy. However, this is a slippery slope IMO, because on the one hand you don't want to be responsible for letting that man's family starve (if indeed he is fishing for food as he stated...which is entirely another matter in itself), but on the other, you have to abide by the letter of the law. It is not up to the warden to interpret the law, just to make sure he enforces it. Also, I was thinking if I was fishing strictly for food to feed my family (as opposed to some other reason), then I would stay there as long as it took to catch my legal limit of legal fish (I mean, if my family is depending on me for , then I would certainly do whatever it took, even if that meant for hours to catch the legally allowed number and size of fish).

The main topic is about legal sizes. If you want to throw back any legal size fish because you feel that it is unethical, than that is your choice. The law is the law period. Calling the GW was the right thing to do, and we all know that. They are there to enforce the laws, not us. People will kill each other for stupid reasons these days, so why confront a total stranger especially when there is a kid there with you? Be a good role model and not Superman. Let the law deal with him.

If he could not afford food for his family there are other things that he could do (legal things). He did not have to fish illegally. I understand this is a touchy subject but everytime this happens all the person has to say is that it is for food, and that is okay? NO!!!

Im going to call BS on you snowy, if youre out there stretching fish and telling someone that is helping protect something we love. The only reason I think someone with that thought process would not keep a fish is because they dont feel like cleaning it.

The thing I meant about stretching fish is that everybodys done it....not that I am the only person that has ever done it. Are you gonna say you never stretched one to try to get it to 10. I think everbodys done it.

If he was really concerned about protecting the species, he should have confronted the man, not sneaked around and called the law. .
Why didnt he say something to him, like put those fish back in the water, or I will, or I will call the law.
So snowy, if you saw someone spot-lighting deer at night would you go and ask them if they were hungry or call the game warden? You never know what someone will do nowadays. I've heard of people getting killed for less.

I wouldnt confront someone with a weapon in the middle of the woods. No,I would not. Thats what makes a game wardens job so tough

I think everbodys done it. Oh really, you are the 'one & only' that 'sees all and knows all' right? When did God appoint you His right-hand man? Geez, give us a break! So, let someone trespass across your property to take from your garden, fruit trees, etc. (since they are hungry), steal from your house (since they are hungry), take your car/truck to drive around town looking for a grocery store (since they are hungry) and you will not call the police on them? Dude, you're a piece of work! Stealing is stealing! Whether you do it on small scale or large scale, it's still the same and it is taking from all of us. Not only that, but the individual fishing lied to the gentleman saying he didn't catch any legal-sized fish!
