Please let it be the weather, because my wife is going to use my jewels as bait next if I dont show something from all the money I spent. I have a dawia rod and reel (baitcaster) and I can cast with it fine. Overcame backlashes, and I am solid there. I have tried all kinds of rigs - worms, spinner bait, rebel crawfish lures, rattle traps, etc. I might as well be putting 20 dollar bills on my hook every time I cast, maybe then I would catch something. I have fished out in the ponds in woodland springs (they say its stocked but I think they threw in Gordan's fish sticks and hoped for the best) I have tried Grapevine lake and caught a nice wind burn (what is the with the wind this year), and I even went out to 377 and 1171 and tried under that bridge.

Please, for the love of all that is Holy, bassy, and crappie help me. Otherwise look for me on ebay. Folks, I swear I just want to catch one fish. One. Fish. I dont care what it is, if its on drugs, trying to commit suicide, I dont care. I want to pull it out of the water. Advice? Places? what time is the best time to catch them, anything..give me something. Please.

Must be the crappy weather of late. Remember if it was easy it would be called catching.

Well you have a few options and they may be some more money but will be worth it. Hire Guide Jeff Kirkwood and go to Lake Fork for a day of fishing with him, hire Tarponfly to take you out in Rowlett creek for a great day of catching lots and lots of sandies, or the enexpensive of the three would be to post in the Bass fishing section that you are looking for someone to fish with that has a boat and see if someone will let you tag along with them for the cost of gas. Any way you go you are going to learn and thats the hardest part about getting started is learning. Both Jeff and Tarponfly are great teachers and you will learn a lot from them and then your wife wont use your jewls. O and one more thing keep looking at all the posts on here because a lot of people will help teach you you just have to look close. I'll be fishing next week on Ray Hubbard weather permitting let me know if you want to chip in for some gas and I'll try to teach you a few things.

Hey Roland, hang in there. I have been fishing for 20 years now and I am on my personal WORST streak of my life. Been skunked 8 times in a row. Feb. is a very HARD month to fish. The weather is changing everday from 30 to 80, back to 30, etc etc. The fish are moving shallow, then moving deep, moving shallow, then moving deep. The fish are there to be caught if you can locate them and when you do, they typically are bigger fish.

Catfish are easier than bass! Get some chicken liver, nightcrawlers, stinkbait, and/or doughbait, put it on the bottom around a point in the water that transitions from current to still, and wait! You might get skunked every once and awhile, but not EVERY time.

Its the weather/time of year. I've been catching all winter and skunked last week.

It cannot hurt to have someone share a few honey holes and techniques. I've had slow days turn into the best days fishing because I copied off of someone's success who was kind enough to share a few secrets. If I see someone throw a lure and retrieve it a dozen times in a dozen minutes and catch 1 fish, I don't think about the 11 casts without a fish but the one that worked. However, if I'm by myself or not sure if they are biting, might cast 10 times and give up where I could have been pulling in a 1/2 dozen fish an hour if I really tried.

Generally, if they aren't biting, I'll downsize, change depths, or move, until I find the fish. Right now if I were gunning for bass / crappie from the bank I'd fish the shady side of timber with a scented roadrunner and a bobber at the warmest time of the day... or just do chores and hone up the hooks for April when everything gets really good for bank fishing.

-Roland Roux: this is the time of year to slughter the sandbass. when they are biting, you can hook a fish on every cast or at least get a bite.

i have only spent $356.43 this year on tackle(line, rods, reels, hooks...ect) and minnows combined( i keep track ). and that equals out to over 1000+ fish this year so far, -starting febuary 8th till now. if i dont know what im doing in a particular body of water, "I" will hire a "guide". it saves you tons of money in the long run. We, "guides", will teach you how to fish properly and how to use the tackle to catch the fish. and of course what tackle to buy and what not to. the sandbass run is only a 35 minute drive from you.

so think about it.

1. About $10 in gas there and back.
2. Minnows, 2 people will go through about a pound a day ( $17 )
3. Hooks, about 5 a day per person at about $1 on average for 5 hooks
4. Tollway money $8

-now if you go fishing there 10 days in a row, that is about $260 dollars. now on the bad side, it would cost you $3760 if you dont know what your doing and go 10 days in a row or ten days in a month and not catch anything and have to have the surgery.

you can spend $125 average with a guide and catch fish within 5 casts and fill your freezer up with fish by the end of the trip. with that said, you should be trained by us to do it all by yourself the next day and live happy and walk straight.

Try the barge its usually good for two or three crappie

Yeah weather is everything, for an example i went down to a creek when a cold front was coming in i caught 21 white bass that saturday and came back sunday and only caught 3. The next weekend i fish saturday and sunday and got 0 for my troubles. Well went back the next weekend a cold front came in about 5 am saturday morning and caught 20 white bass and missed over 10 of them and can back on saunday and caught 1 so yeah weather is everything when it comes to fishing. Even rain can change things i know if it rains alot of north and our river starts to rize if i can catch the river on a rize i can catch catfish off the bank with a rod & reel. Another example we got flooded oneday in our town and all the rain water was heading down a creek into a lake like a mighty river so i fish the creek where in comes into the lake in just 4 hours me and my dad caught 59 catfish going from 3 to 5 pounds so yeah the weather plays a big factor on fishing. And yeah i have been fishing many times fresh and salt water fishing where i did not catch anything so don't feel bad about not catching anything just keep trying you will catch fish.

It sounds like your set up for bass fishing right now.
Go get you a cheap $20 spinning setup from Academy and buy some 1/8 oz jigs. Find you the closest major creek and head out to it late this coming week... The sandbass are bound to be running in that creek with this next warmup and are fairly easy to catch once you locate them. Find a spot with a lot of people around - 1. You'll know its a popular spot and 2. You can watch how the others fish and learn their techniques.

It's a tough time of year, but it's about to get much better. A guide would defintely be a big help, but in case you've busted your budget, here is a lesser alternative:
It seems you're open to multiple species so that can help your cause. There is so much variety in our waters so targeting more than one can often save you from shut-outs. Some fish are in creeks and some are deep right now. Others are there, you've just got to find them and also present what they will bite. I'd go basic and use an extra rod or two. Rig one with chicken livers or hot dog pieces to try for catfish. One with whole kernal canned corn for perch, etc (you'd be amazed at the fish you can catch with corn). If you only have one rod, you can get more for like 15 bucks. These are good for perch, etc. Use a small float/bobber and some small hooks for the perch. Use a larger hook and some weight to keep the hook near the bottom for catfish. Now your fishing with 3 rods and for 3+ species. Another great bait is live minnows which catch almost anything. You can cast the catfish/perch baits within visual range and keep fishing for bass with your other rod. Finally, you need to find cover - a place for fish to hide and ambush smaller fish or your bait. Look to fish near/under docks, near ends of points (where the land points out into the water, any wood or grass in the water, etc. Fish often like shade. Also, fish into wind and current. Fish usually face towards the wind and current looking for things being pushed towards them to feed on.
Don't worry, you'll eventually catch lots of fish, especially as the water warms up and the perch move up right close to the bank. But for now, take the pressure off and just go out your next couple times and try to be observant and learn/practice.
