As much as I love to fish, I also love to take someone fishing; especially kids. The striper bite has been good at certain times on the Brazos. Barometer readings and water temps, and traditional tribal knowledge, seem not to matter much here lately.A few small details; tackle and size of the gizzards we were using, seemed to make all the difference between catching a few striped bass, or not catching anything. Knowing this we felt confident we could put some folks on some fish. Me and my new fishing buddy cracker jack, decided to take some of my neighbors to the river, so we loaded up and off we went. Brazos bound cracker jack shared a mountain of wealth about striper fishing techniques along with some tall tales or so we thought until he broke out a photo album of striper and hybrid pics that would make you wanna slap your fishing guide.(lol) Fish ranging from 14 to 48 lbs. We were amazed at the quality of some of the fish. By the time we got to the river we were reeling with anticipation. Cracker warned us not to expect fish of this magnitude but, could expect some good fishing. I knew between my fishing knowledge and this guys knowledge we were going to have a shot at doing some catching as well as the fishing. We hit cracker jacks bait hole only to find a 12 lb striper covered in what appeared to be grey moss! Hes seen a lot of these fish covered up with this stuff! Must be some kind of fish disease because, the flesh underneath was rotten. After a brief netting session we loaded up on about 60 hand size gizzards. Thats what the stripers seem to prefer based on stomach surveys done by crackerjack lately. First shad lobbed out got swallowed. Cracker with a long sweeping hook set with his new 10 ft. st. croix hes so proud of was hooked up with 1st fish of the day. And then another and another. In all we caught 9 in 1 1/2 hours. During the intense but brief bite we encountered yet another species, a big black bass, as usual on the Brazos. He weighed in at around 8lbs; look like a football. We promptly released the big bass back into the river. Funny how these river bass usually only jump once before giving in to you. As majestic as that lmb was, nothing compared to our little buddys fish, it was the last fish of the night. Yes, I was thinking the same thingHow fitting!Since the boy was having a fit trying to hook up.And he was our special geust. We set him up with a 3/0 circle and a 8 inch shad and lobbed him into our honey hole. We handed the boy the rod and told him to keep slight thumb pressure on the spool and told him to watch the line to keep slack out in case yet another big bass gulped the bait down .Their notorious for just sitting there after an attack But as soon as the bait got his heading it got crushed! The fish came up and made a rather large swirl along with a distinct noise made only by a striper sucking in a bait on top .As soon as the run steadied we instructed the boy to engage the reel and then point the rod directly at the fish. We knew we had a good one she immediately pulled off 20+ yrds of drag set at 7 lbs. We kicked ourselves at forgetting our cameras as we missed some great action pics of the kid fighting the fish in total darkness and hip deep water. The kids giant smile seemed to glow in the night, it was so big! And his eyes! They were so big and full of delight. The size of the fish surprised the young boy when I got a handful of mouth and pulled the great fish from the now pitch black river.. In reluctant fashion to leave such a beautiful place on a beautiful night on the amazing Brazos River, we hit our lights and did just that. What a great end to a short and sweet nights fishing. Sorry ace, since I had a copy also;I couldnt wait any longer, so I posted my version. I followed the script and added a few lines, thanks to my wife I think it might fly.I wrote it from aces perspective.
