Ok Guys so I'm trying to figure this out, let me see if I have this right, A OK fishing license for me costs how much? And for my 16 yr old son? And my 12 yr old son? We live in Austin, TX. so they would be Non-resident Licenses. Tent camping is $10 a night. What are the daily limits for trout per person?

You will need a 5 day Non-Resident Fishing License ($18.50), plus a trout permit ($10) plus Fishing and Hunting Legacy Permit.($5)
Your sons will need, a Non-Resident Trout License ($5) and a Fishing and Hunting Legacy Permit (Free), thats it.
Now all the changes if you are older then 64.

that is the best i can do. you can only camp in the designated grounds. print this map. it helps a ton. i highlighted blue zone and red zone. pay attention to where you are. to be safe, i just crimp all my barbs before i tie a fly. helps from freying it during the tie, and i dont have to worry about crimping while fishing. camp in AREA H. you can walk to the eavning hole and lost creek and fish the whole time there and back. red zones get lots of pressure so be stealthy. below is a good list for you. You know, the strange thing is I had good phone signal just about everywhere in the park last week - unlike ever before. Top of the dam always works though. shannon

I also had decent cell phone signal last weekend which I have not had before. I also agree about staying away from Wal Mart. The people there are rude and of no help...that is if you can even find anyonoe to help you.

Dang I wish I had that fly list before I left...oh well, I will print it off for my next visit. I am back now. The trip was beautiful. It got really cold and rained just as we finished putting up the tent on Wed evening. Then it got really cold fast. Thurs and Frid no rain, beautiful weather during the day. I bought my license at the Beaver's Bend State Park, could not find the Three Rivers Fly Shop...the first day. Now I know where it is. I bought about five flies, and then bought my son some salmon eggs. I bought 3 Red Squirrel Fox Nymphs, one Magog Smelt (beautiful and I lost it before I got to use it five minutes...never could find it sadly) Then I bought some other little fly I forget the name of, small with soft hackle. We fished about an hour and a half Wed before dark. Not even a bite, and it was cold. Thurs I got a fish before lunch. I got it on a bead head prince nymph. I went through I couldn't tell you how many varities of flies, and none were working. The cold made the fish quit biting completely Wed evening, and Thurs morn. I got a bite on a olive woolly bugger later. Can't remember what else they bit on besides a nymph I made that was similar to Dave's Sucker Punch. They would not touch any midges at all. I tried so many flies it was ridiculous. Later Thurs the fishing was gonna be good I thought, but it was slow again. Nobody was catching. Then I saw a man get three right in a row right before dark, on a olive woolly bugger. This morn we were out and the second cast I had a trout hit my pink woolly bugger, but then no more. My son sadly never got a fish at all. I finally got desperate and pulled out my Mickey Finn thinking it wouldn't work, and bam...I got bit three times on it, meanwhile nobody else was catching. The first one got off right off the bat. It was a big one a local called Luther. He has been caught many times before, and always throws the hook before getting pulled in. Now that was exciting. Then I managed to hook two more fish on the same fly...and was pulling them in and they got off. I think the reason was because the dang barbs were crushed, in that area you had to have no barbs, which stinks. Now I wonder if crushing the barbs on all the flies I make were such a good idea, Mike I think you were right...they get off too easy that way. I just knew I had them, but nope, they got off in their bronco busting style they have and shook it off. Later, we were in Lost Creek and I saw fish, but again no biting was going on. I got a couple of bites this afternoon, but now I cannot remember what the fly was. I know one was a zebra midge. I will have to look at my fly box to refresh my memory, I am tired. My son enjoyed the fly fishing, and the place. His casting is very good for just learning. I had so hoped he would get some fish, but sadly no. I will post a pic of me in a minute. My son took pics with a disposable camera, and only one of me with my cell phone camera. My head is partially chopped off, but what the heck...I will post it anyhow. I love Evening Hole, and Lost Creek. Thanks so much for the recommendation!!!

Well there are lots of different black midges. I am not sure which one you meant. I know they sold a few kinds at the fly shops there, but they were so small I could not see to tie it on my tippet. Anything 16 and under is about impossible for me. I have tied a few in 16, but it is not easy. 14 is about as small as I like to go. Now I did use a size 16 or maybe small Copper John. I got a nip on that...just one little itty bitty one. I used small red flies, and small black flies. I used flies with black and red. I would not think any dry fly would of worked the days I went. Remember Wed was the last day before stocking, thus not many trout in the water. Thurs morn I saw them stock at one part, but it takes a while for them to work through the system I guess. The only folks I saw that were really catching were leaving just as I got there after packing our gear up at about 11am or a little later. They were at Lost Creek and I think they were using Power Bait, and corn or something. They were not fly fishing. They had lots of fish. Nobody else I saw got more than three any day I was there. One man I talked to was at Lost Creek Wed evening...he said he fished all day and got two fish. Now today before we left the people were all over the place. I would think any weekend there would be too busy. I think next time I go it will have to be during the weekday, no doubt. I do appreciate that list you made up of flies. I am going to copy that and print it off for my next trip. I will go sometime after the new year comes around. Cannot afford another trip there....got the holidays coming up. I am still glad we tent camped, as it was much cheaper. But we did get cold...lol. Now I know my way around there a little, it will help on the next trip. I definitely plan to go again!!

I did not fish by the state park's fly shop. I stayed totally on the area Evening Hole, and Lost Creek. There were people using spinning gear by the fly shop. I will have to explore more areas to fish there. I wonder how the spillway/dam area is. I was so thrilled with the Evening Hole I wanted to stay there. Lost Creek was good further on back, but not up front. It had too many people crowded around. Probably more than normal cause it was just stocked. We really thought the place was gorgeous. My son loved it. But then again he loved throwing rocks, and getting the camp fire going, and making cans melt in the fire... I had hoped for him to catch several fish and totally get psyched about fly fishing. But he was happy that it was a new skill he learned. I told him to keep at it, or he would forget what he learned. Still he had a few hours doing some casting, and that should of cemented it into his mind. I think he was in awe of how many fly anglers he saw out there. I am kind of the odd ball around here, as I am the ONLY one he knows who fly fishes. Now he will be doing it some, and I hope to get him into a bunch of fish so he will be crazy about fly fishing. If he hooks into one or two decent sized fish, or lots of bream, he will become a believer.
