The state park has cabins that may be just what you are wanting. If you fish up spillway creek you can fish effectively from the bank in many places...at least you can using spinning gear. You may go all the way up to the spillway and try there. We didnt fish there as there were a lot of people over the weekend, but it may be better when you are there.

I've only been once but found lots of places along Spillway Creek and Lost Creek that were fishable from the bank or with easy wading rarely more than knee deep. Spillway Creek has a lot of pocket water sections and you don't want to be that deep in those anyway. I didn't fish "Zone 2" because they were generating the whole time I was there, so I couldn't tell you about that, but from looking it over I suspect it's easily wade-fished without going chest-deep.

The Evening Hole is one really special spot. Whether you catch fish there or not it hardly matters, it's just so peaceful & beautiful with gentle water and a solid 1/3 mile of really easy wading and one honey hole after the next. Spend some time there for sure. Lost Creek is really nice and definitely bank-fishable and the Cold Hole was very productive for me when I was there - caught an 18-inch trout there that was the best of my day.

As for places to stay, I don't have a recommendation - the place I stayed was grim. Cabins in the park might be just perfect, and of course there's plenty of camp sites too.

Thanks guys, that does help. However, I was really thinking of a cheap motel, that was clean. I could pitch a tent, but if I do we won't be there much, and I am afraid my stuff may get stolen. It was just be a tent, and two sleeping bags, with a coleman lantern and a ice chest. We would be fishing just about the whole time, or going to the area spots to look around during the afternoon if fishing slows down. I am hoping to take my son out tomorrow for his first lesson in fly casting/fishing. Now I hear it may rain tomorrow afternoon. I will have to look at the weather there in Broken Bow. I was thinking of going Thurs and Friday...

I wouldn't worry about stuff getting stolen. I highly recommend tent camping up there. Of course that is all I do when I go. The camp sites are great and they do have showers and restrooms. There is also a restaurant and store inside the state park, so you really dont even need to leave the river once you get there. We were there this weekend and had people all around us and we just left our camping supplies out and never thought twice about it getting stolen.

The area you are talking about is Broken Bow State Park, or what do they call it? I will have to see about getting a reservation.

If you are asking about the camping area and/or cabins on the LMF river it would be the Beaver's Bend State park

you dont need a reservation to tent camp...just find a spot and set up. Costs $10 per tent and they will come to you to collect the money.

I would avoid water much deeper than your ankles unless you use felt bottom waders. Do not step on any flat looking rocks. It is unbelieveable how slick that river is. That said, you still should have a wonderful experience.

I do have felt bottom wading boots. My son however has nothing. He wanted to get some swim shoes to fish in, I am afraid he will slip. Thanks for the heads up on the camping, and the caution about the slippery rocks!!!

it was not to bad on the slippery part last week. i didnt loose footing one time. even with the felt boots i usually slip a lot. but not this time. best places are lost creek and the eaving hole. just talk to Sid at the fly shop. he will let you know what flys to pick out.

I too have never been to the LMFR, but am looking at going next week during the week. I have heard about Evening Hole, but where is it exactly?

I will possibly get a very few flies, don't have money to blow. I already have quite a few flies to choose from that should work. I have lots of flies I made. Plus a select few folks have sent me some great flies too. Are the flies there reasonable?

Oh I forgot to ask...if you just fish in a state park in Ok, is it the same in Tx...like free fishing without a license as long as you fish in the state park? If not I will buy a license. I don't know if Tx is the only state that allows anyone that comes to the state park, to fish like that. Also I am gonna have to see if my son who is 15 will have to have some kind of license. I hope not because I wasn't planning to get him a license.

NO, they are not like Texas parks! You WILL need a license and expect to be checked while on the river. They watch it close, especially up by the dam.

Oh yeah, the other thing is that even kids are required to buy a trout stamp.

Take some small wooly buggers in black, olive, or rust with you. They often work up there. Bead head egg patterns will often work too.

There are two good fly shops up there, Sid's inside the park and Three Rivers located just outside the park. I prefer the Three Rivers shop, but Sid's has a better web site for fishing updates.

For hotels, there are several in Broken Bow in a variety of price ranges. I haven't stayed in town, but the Microtel and I think it is called the Broken Bow Inn have been popular with folks in the local club looking for a low cost room.
