I took the day off work and headed up Yegua creek from Nails Creek State Park. The lake is about 1.5 foot low so it was tough getting into the creek across the flats but was well worth the effort. It's about 6 miles from the park to the Newman's Bottom bridge by kayak. The fishing was just OK as I caught several black bass (biggest was about 3 lbs) and a few sunnies and one nice catfish. The snakes were out in force! I saw at least 4 different kinds but will spare most of the pictures of the snakes! I'm already going to be seeing them in my nightmares wink

BIG Bullfrog

A young male wood duck

yes this is a water moccasin! bad attitude and all, one of two for the day !

Nutria baby and adult. There was about ten of these water rats hanging around the mouth of the creek.

This little frog would have fit on a penny!

More birds then you could shook a stick at! These are Spoonbills and endangered Wood Storks.

anyone know what kind of bird this is?

and last but not least a typical Yegua creek turtle

Nice pics. Especially liked the fat cottonmouth.

The bird looks to me like a black-crowned night heron.

Good call on the water moccasin. Can't tell you how many water snakes are mistakenly classified as a cottonmouth. That there is the real deal! Nice bunch of pics!

Gene is probably right about the bird being a black crowned night heron but it was not a fully mature bird in full dress yet. General shape and the red eye makes me think that Gene is correct. There were two of these birds but only one would let me get close enough for a fleeting shot..

here is a photo from the web of a mature bird

Great pics, next best thing to being there. How far is that from the metroplex?

Lake Somerville is about 75 miles west of Houston and Yegua creek is the main water source coming in from the northwest (top of the lake)
