why not just go to Northern Tools or Harbor Freight and pick up some submersible fountain lights for about $10 each smile

I would guess that they are not near as bright. Also, not as heavy duty and no ballast for auto turn on and off. I figure my time is worth more than the effort and time that I would have to spend making a system that may or may not work or last too long. Or even electrocute me. All I had to do is plug it in and drop in the water.
My neighbor made one with a 5 gallon bucket and a pool light that works OK. But I get more fish swimming around mine. Plus the green light looks really cool.

Hi,

My name is Brian and I am new to the Forum, but I saw this thread and thought it was the perfect time to introduce myself and our company UnderWaterFishLight.com

We manufacture the Semi-Permanent HID systems shown in a few of the pictures above.

I would be happy to answer any questions that anyone has about
these systems or attracting fish in general.

I saw a lot of things that I would like to address, so I will try to break them down by category.

Home Made Systems

To answer the question about rigging up your own system, I am of course biased because we offer these systems for sale, but there is a much more serious point to be made.

If you are mixing electricity and water, the potential for disaster can be very high. I strongly recommend that you purchase a professionally made system, whether it be from us or another manufacturer.

The research and development on our lights took months and months, and we went through dozens of failures before we had a reliable product ready for market. We get calls every week from people who have spent hundreds trying to make their own systems before finally just buying one of ours.

Cleaning The Bulb

Because our systems are High Intensity Discharge Systems ( the same technology as luxury car headlights and stadium lighting), the particle vapors inside the bulb actually generate quite a bit of heat.

This is sufficient to keep organsisms like algae, barnacles, mussels, and other aquatic slimes from adhering to the bulb. While they may attach themselves during the day, every night when the system powers up, it kills any growth that may have accumulated.

If you place the system in a ridiculously silty body of water, it may get some dirt on the bulb over time. All you have to do is unplug it, pull it up and wipe it with your hand or a paper towel. It's very easy.

Alternative Lights

There are a lot of lights on the market like the pond lights mentioned above, but they do not produce nearly the output or energy efficiency that these HID Systems do.

Not only are these lights much brighter, but the reaction between the light produced from electricaly charged gasses and the microorganisms and particulates in the water is what creates the cool green glow.

The bulbs themselves are clear, and when placed in completely clean water like a swimming pool, there is almost no green at all. (not for use in pools, just used as an example). But when placed in any natural body of water, the effect is simply stunning.

We have tested all kinds of underwater lights, and the particular spectrum put out by these high powered Mercury Vapor Systems attract more fish than any other range we have found.

Basically, you can buy a cheap pond light, but it is not going to be nearly the same effect.

These lights are actually designed so that they create a "mirror effect" on the under-surface of the water.

Rather than the beam of a pond light piercing the surface and shining up, most of the light produced by the system is reflected back into the water, creating the outdoor aquarium effect.

More Information

I could certainly go on and on about the lights and their application, but I will wait to see if anyone has any specific questions.

In the mean time, we have a Frequently Asked Questions Page on our website at http://www.underwaterfishlight.com/html/faq.html with tons of information.

If anyone is interested in purchasing an HID system, we are proud to offer the highest quality systems on the market, at the lowest prices in the country.

We back everything with a Money Back Satisfaction Guarantee & Full Warranty.

You can check out a ton of videos and pictures at http://www.UnderwaterFishLight.com

I can be reached directly at sales@underwaterfishlight.com

I look forward to hearing from you.

What if you dont want it on every night, but only when you are down at your dock? Is there a on/off switch for the photocell?

The system is designed to come on automaticaly every night for two reasons.

The first is to keep the bulb free of growth and deposits. It's pretty amazing how quickly they will start to attach to the bulb if not powered up every night.

The second reason is that the light is infinitely more effective when on an automatic schedule is that fish learn the location of the light and return to it on a regular basis.

If you were to only turn the light on when you were at the dock, you would have to count on fish being in the immediate vicinity and showing up during that given time.

With the regular schedule, it becomes a feeding station and the same fish show up night after night. When other fish wander into the area at night by chance, they can't help but be attracted to all the commotion and scent created by the "regulars". Soon they get hooked on the light and the crowd grows.

While you should see increased activity the first night, and lots of fish within 3, the longer the light has been in place, the more fish it will tend to hold.

If your concern is with energy costs, the systems run on under $4 in electricity per month, so it's more affordable to operate than you might think.

Brian,

Thought I would try to answer your question further. I too had concerns about leaving the light on while I was away from my dock, not because of the electric bill but because of the crowds of fisherman that it may attract. The one that I purchased has a removable plug "light sensor" that can be removed which turns the light off. I have learned to now take this with me while I am not there so that the light stays off. Don't miss understand me, I don't mind responsible people fishing around my dock, it's just those few who can screw it up for the rest. One time I left the light on for a few weeks and found my light on top of my deck in a big mess with trash everywhere. Leaving the light on all the time is probably better for attracting fish but it also attracts more people. I still have lots of fish @ the light even if I leave it off for a week and turn it on when I am there.

Well it may be a small price but i just dont want people around. I have a pretty good honey hole and dont really like the idea of visitors. If you have ever been to Texoma you would know there is a MILLION striper guides and dont want then around running trips at night. Is there a way to lower the light in the water only when you want to? Like if you had it on a 10ft piece of pvc?

It would actually be quite simple to remove the light from the water if you didn't want it to run every night.

Simply pull the cord gently until the weight is just below the surface and pull it out with your hand. The system is designed to stay in place, so you want to be gentle to ensure longevity, but there is nothing complicated about it.

When you want to redeploy the light, simply lower it back down into the water, or like you said, use a pole if you are going to place it further out from the dock.

If you decide to leave it on, on a regular basis, you can always go out and unplug it if you have unwanted visitors. If people learn that you are the type to shut it off when they show up, they are less likely to try.

Hey UnderWaterFishLight,

I wouldn't mind having another underwater light. I think these lights are the best thing you can add to you deck! Do you have any used/demos that you would like to get rid of at a cheaper cost?

You are right. These things are just so cool. The first time I saw one I knew I had to get involved with the company.

I had a classic "snook light" on my dock before these and the difference is night and day.

As for older models or demos, I will look into that for you, but I don't know of any off hand.

But, if you want to get together with a neighbor or two, or maybe a couple of forum members, I could probably put together a group discount for you.
