First time poster, and a small water fishing guy. I hear water wagons mentioned and wondered are they still available and does anyone have a picture or a website to see one. Can you build one and how hard would it be. I currently have 2 float tubes, a bass hunter and a 14' alunimum but hey whats one more boat. Anyone know of a local DFW retailer that has them. I am not wanting a pontoon kickboat, I just remember seeing a styrafoam kickboat in outdoor life and am trying to track it down. thanks

There was a company in Amarillo that used to make them. I have one I bought used. The gent I bought it from said the type of foam used for them is no longer available which is why they are no longer being made. I did some searching on the web trying to find plans but was unable too locate any.

I was able to register mine and right now just waiting for the time to stick a trolling motor on it and try it out. Been working to much. He said it is rated for a 3.5 hp motor but a trolling motor will fit my needs better and the motor does not have to be registered.

If you browse this topic to back around march or april he posted two of them for sale somewhere around that time. He had two when I bought mine, dont know if he still has the other one or not.

Feel free to send a pm if you need more information. I probably still have his email and t/p number somewhere.

If you put a trolling motor on it you have to register it. a motor is a motor. No differance between gas or electric.

You have to register the boat, the trolling motor does not have to be registered which is what I said. If you read my post I said I registered the boat.

Anyone have a picture of the water wagon? I was also looking at echo venture kick boats, anyone have one of those. I am trying to find something that does'nt leak air and you sit a little higher up than a belly boat.

I have plans for a kick boat made from styrofoam. If I'm nice maybe I can get my wife to scan them and post them. Will try to get them up this week end

Just as the line between cover and structure gets muddier and muddier each year, so does the definitions between kickboat and float tube or other small crafts. Here is the typical idea of what a kickboat is. A kickboat usually will have oars that come with regardless of whether or not they are used. Float tubes I've yet to see come with oars.

The water wagon we're talking about is a rectangular, flat piece of styrofoam with indentions cut into the surface in circles and/or other shapes for storage. You sit on top of it with your feet hanging off. Their is a rectangular cut out at the front for your legs to hang off and a metal stablizer bar connecting two sides that extend out past your legs.

They also had some that had an extended transom that stuck up on the back and some guys put small outboards on them of 2-4 HP.

Just like my inflatable pontoon but the pontoons are made from styrofoam, gotcha

The up turned table with the Mercury outboard looks mighty impressive but I would hardly encourage such boating practices. Being one who trys to practice following all boating laws, I see the lack of registration numbers on the pictured vessel a complete disregard for maritime law. popcorn2 rolfmao

My computer drawing not so good, but this is what a water wagon looks like. Mine is alittle long. I may cut it down. I made the DIM. so it fits in my Ranger. The "red" line is where I still need to place a piece of alum. tubing for a carry handle. 12" thick block(edit)

OK, got a 4X8X12" styrafoam block today. cut it into 2 halves to make 2 boats 48"X54"X12". It was easiest to cut big cuts with a carpenter finish saw. and a hack saw blade to help round the edges and then sand them so they won't break easy. indent area 20"X15". Ok 2 boats big mess in the garage. paint it tomorrow. I did put it in the pool and got on it. It only draws 3" and so I would get it 10" thick next time cuz 12" sits alittle high, but it will fish just fine. The styrafoam guy said use water base/latex paint. The mobile home roof paint is a white latex based paint designed to reflect the heat. I need to figure a way to cut a indent or 2 for tackle, small ice box and rod holder. 2 coats tomorrow and it will be good.

P.S. I posted a place to get styrafoam in the fly fishing room under water wagon.
P.S.S.I also had my son post a picture of the 2 I made in the flyfishing room also.

This may help you with some ideas on how to shape and contour the styrofoam.

48 x 54? from 4 x 8 block? where did you get the extra 6"?
half of 8' (96") is 4' (48").

Are you sure your block wasn't 4 x 9? or the cut pieces 4 x 4?

Actually its more like 53" cuz i rounded it on the nose a little.
center point is 48" then 6" from the center line in both directions. Then make a 45 degree line from one corner to the other. I used a carpenter finish saw and took my time. // is the ideal cut to gain the additional 5/6" and give it a little rake on the bow to cut the water. Hope that helps if not call me at 214-709-7200 until about 9:00p.m.

They are made of arcel which is hard to get. Styrafoam blocks is easier to get and work with but probably won't support a outboard. Trolling motor maybe.... I know a place in dfw if you need the number PM me.

It Should make a fine boat cuz it costs a mint. I was quoted $259.00 for a block 4' X 8' X 6". Too much for what I am trying to accomplish.

This my first post. I love this site! Really some great info on Texas fishing. Here's my rig i've caught everything from rainbow trout to speckled trout on this thing. It's called a water wagon weighes 27 lbs before you start bolting stuff on it. I've got a fish finder and @ 2 horse motor.I use flippers while I'm fishing and sometimes troll with the motor.

I have made in the past styrafoam versions of the water wagon and I love mine BUT I still want a original so I can strap a gas motor on the back and go ZOOOOOOM across a lake. Styrafoam and gas don't mix well. Call me crazy. loco

These are called fishing Pals. The last ones were made about 20 years ago. This is my third one so when I wear it out it will be time to retire.

This one belongs to my son. He still uses it but, not near as much as me.

Has anyone considered fiber-glassing the Styrofoam?
We used to make model airplanes that did all sorts of acrobatics out of Styrofoam and then put a thin fiberglass cloth with epoxy (the kind that did not attach Styrofoam) over it.
Could possible put a plywood section where the motor mount would go and it just might hold.

Just my thoughts - I'm not an engineer so no implied reliability to anything I say!!

The difference between winners and losers:
Winners blame themselves for their failures and strive to get better.
Losers blame everybody else and give up.

Arcel is flammable in a liquid form, needs refrigeration, and requires a mold to pour into to make said boat. All these things add up to NOT being able to make in my garage I share with my wife. stir If you want to make one, just model it after said units, put a piece of plywood on top of the styrafoam and get it covered with polyurea(Duraliner spray in bedliner). I am not sure how much weight it will add but it should work and you could then put a motor on and register it. I sure wish I could get the old water wagon molds, then it might be worth it. thumb

Fished off a wagon for many years in the Mini Boat Bass Club from Amarillo. Had over 30 members in the 90`s.
Ran the new style wagon with a 4 horse Merc. 7ft. long and would get up and GO. eeks

Does anyone think that old styrofoam from the old marinas that holds up the docks could be used for a kick boat? And if so is there a way to put two big pieces together to make it thicker if you have thinner sheets? Or would some type of waterproof glue work?
Then lastly if i can get this made up and used a waterproof paint on the inside to stiffen it up would their be a interest to anyone to buy them if i make them?

There is great interest in buying the various versions (see other posts on this forum) of these foam boats. Yet everyone that has tried making them for profit in the past, has not been able to keep a going business at it, and that would seem to say something. The profits may not be there for something so simple to make, and the liabilities might be too great. They have not held market share against inflatable or hard plastic versions, so maybe they are an inferior product in comparison? Who knows, the world of business is quite complex!

I was going to only make some not as a business, something for extra money and only as long as i have the material. I just got back from making two trips and have enough to make 11 of them right now. if there is a interest then get more material. Its used so not the prettiest but its big enough pieces i have to cut to make it smaller so wont have to glue anything together. Just going to make them basic and sell them and if the buyer wants to add a seat or cup holder and such he can do it. Ill do the basic design and sell them hopefully painted for like 75 bucks or less. so anyone interested can em ail me about them and when i get one finished ill post a pic of it and see if any interest or not, ill keep one for myself and sell the others and if no interest then give them to friends or whatever

I've had mine since 2000; I painted it with Kool Seal, which is a paint used on mobile home roofs; its beat up a little but I wouldn't do anything to it to make it heavier as I can carry it pretty easily now-p-

use a carpenter "finish saw" I think 24" works great. Premark it on both sides and keep track of it as you cut. dimensions on the ones I made are 40"X 72"X10" thick. Inset 20" wideX24" deep. round off the edges by use a electric jitterbug sander with 80 grit emery cloth/sand paper. BIGG MESS= Send the wife shopping for the afternoon. the steel bar is not really needed. mark your tackle and inset areas and Use a jigsaw to cut out inset areas and then use the sander to smooth the areas. I have made about 12 to date. I cut my own down to 52" to fit in my van, still works fine. I hope this helps.

thanks ill try that
all these are 36 wide,12 deep and 72 length. I have experimented on two blocks so far just to get the feel for it and have 9 more left to actually make it. Im thinking out of the cut up ones ill just use a template to lay on the other ones to mark it instead of measuring all of them, that way lay the template down and mark it that way so dont have to keep measuring all the time.
As far as making trays be hard to do if i sell them since not everyone has the same size boxes so may just put in cup holder on each side then if they wont holders a certain size then cut them in then.

Just built this one (7ā€™4ā€x40ā€)with 3 2ā€ 4ā€™x8ā€™ sheets glued together with gorilla glue. Then shaped and sanded. Then did ā€œPOOR Mans FIBERGLASSā€. Added motor mounts using aluminum and allthread bolts. Going to show pics here instead of new thread.

I got the pond prowler registered and am getting the papers together to register this as home made boat. Tested motors on it and found out a 5hp is too much for my taste. I turned it to quick and took a swim. So a 2-4hp will work. breakdance bannana2

Unknown hrs but if I figured if I could make any money in it? About $1.00 per hour. Material cost 200-$250 bannana2 If your trying to save money over the 8ā€™ pond prowler for $499 at basspro you wonā€™t save money. I just like building things for MYSELF.

I was just curious. I have a couple of Hobie Float Cats which I currently haul around in a pickup. It seems that you could stack 3 or 4 of those in a pickup bed if you tied them down.

Very cool Jay!

Looks like a blast of a boat. **I am 99% sure I know where you took those photos. I need to get my new pass. Have not been out there yet this year! One of my favorite places to fish in my kayak.

Neat! Those Johnson 2 HP engines remind me of one I was given in Venezuela about '91. My Venezuelan buddy called it a "liquidora": Blender!

Made a new one out of 2 sheets of pink foam for fun. Calling it the ā€œBass Kickerā€.

Measure out to 72ā€/39ā€/10ā€. Should fish just fine. Added a transom for a electric motor too.

Since I am a "full-figured" guy (*255 lbs)...(Ha Ha) ...how would I calculate how large a similar boat would have to be to properly support my big butt? I'd assume I would like to have a small outboard...or...a 35 lb. thrust trolling motor with battery.... instead.
Thank you.

p.s. what about registering it in TX??? That must be an issue.

When you make an appointment at TPWD, let them know you have a homemade boat. Keep all your receipts, a game warden will inspect it, and they will register it as homemade.

Raw Styrofoam is banned in some waterways, and small chunks of the material can be broken off and released into the water when sliding over surfaces at boat ramps or with even minor collisions. Pockmarks and small cavities have been are clearly visible on many of the used ones that I have looked at to purchase. But the basic chunk of foam material seems to hold up its strength without any hazardous cracks when this happens. There may be a way to reduce that flaking off issue with special coatings or if they are fiberglassed.

Just my humble observations, may not be a concern for anyone else but me, ha!
