I have one in each tank, the largest is now right at 11". Take a trip down the San Marcos River, you will see thousands of them.

are these sometimes refered to as armored or suckermouth catfish? saw a record fish listing for them of TPWD website, even though they are no catfish, common names are commonly deceiving i mean, a LMB is really a sunfish.. hahaha.

I would like to have a chance at one but not at the expense of our fisheries. I will be happy to never run across one.

Not hardly, I worked in Aquarium fish stores from when I was 18 to 21 yrs old and they aren't worth squat when big . Mostly due to the fact hardly anyone has a tank big enough for them. We turned away countless 12"+ plecos unless they were Royals (which don't get that big normally) from people not realizing they get big. In South America the fish is a food fish, especially the eggs. I have a Royal Plecostomus in my 100 gallon African Cichlid tank for over 8 years now that is only about 7" long.

Scott,

Can you give me any source on the food part in South America? I have searched all over the net to find info to see if they are edible/worth eating and everything I found said they had no food value. I plan to try to eat the next one I shoot but would rather read more about it before I give it a go!

Also, are you sure Hypostomus Plecostomus is the variety that is considered a food fish? The reason I ask is becasue I messed around with cleaning some of these but even the biggest did not have much meat on it. It was mostly bone and hard shell. I had to use tin snips like I do with gar just to get into the meat. Then the only real meat was just in the tail.

Any additional information you can help me with would be greatly appreciated.

LOL i have caught one before and kinda freaked out considering I new what it was. Had one in a 100 gal fish tank and he got to be about 14 inches when he passed on. I figured that someone let it go but come to find out they are out there in our water ways.

All I remember was we had a book about catfishes of the world and there was a S. American Indian looking person scooping the eggs out of a pleco to use for food. I do not remember the name of the book but remember the picture like it was yesterday since it was so gross
