Here is a fish that is quite common in Central Texas waters that most probably do not know exist. They are Hypostomus plecostomus, the common Algea Eaters that you see in aquariums. They have been released into the rivers and lakes around here and do quite a bit of damage to the lake. They dig tunnels into the bank for their nests and can cause serious shoreline erosion. I know bowfishing is not popular on this site but I am a bowfisherman and do my best to try to keep their numbers in check. They have no natural predators and have a HUGE polulation on Lake Dunlap. Just thought some of you guys might like to see something different. And no, I have not tried to eat one althogh, the next time I go out I am going to save a couple on ice and try to clean one. Please don't turn this into a bowfishing debate.

I have put two in my backyard pond two separate years in a row. They got pretty big, but they both died when it got cold.

Plecos are cool! Though, not so good for our lakes lol. Most lakes, they'll die off in the winter, they need the water to stay pretty warm, but some places have sustainable populations like those.
I'd like to catch one some day.
Let us know how they turn out when you try and eat one hehe.

These were all bowfished. I think I said that in my original post. Also, the biggest one was 22 1/2" long. I went back out and measured it.

You should look into the legality of catching them alive and selling them to a petshop. I don't know just how big they will take, but there is at least some market for the ginormous ones, and they usually sell for around $20-30 each.
No fish is too good for the grease.
