Thanks for the info Novato. I now know I nowhave a bad batch from your description!!! You described it to the tee..

Get a cast net. Fresh shad is the go to bait for all three types of cats. You can buy a 5 foot cast net at wal-mart for 26 dollars. One our two cast you have all the fresh bait and the best bait you want. Just a little practice in the front yard with the net and you will be ready for action.

There is no punch dough stinky bait that can continuously compete with fresh shad. If that was not the case then there would be no need for 'commercial bait only' tournaments. If DK or Big Marv or whoever thought they could catch fish as well as fresh shad they would sponsor more cat tournaments. Look at the other fishing tackle companies, Stren, Berkly, FLW, they put tons of money into tournaments because they think their products are better than what ever else is out there. Commercial bait companies would go broke handing out checks to tournament fishermen who in their acceptance speech say, "yup caught 'em over thar in dem trees using fresh cut shad, but please go out and buy this here DK's stinky dough".

Now I know not everyone can get shad readily all the time and some commercial baits will catch fish,,lots of fish; and I have caught fish on DK's, Catfish Charlie, and some other dough baits. What I'm saying is that compared to fresh shad the commercial stuff does not do as well for the larger catfish.

just go fish with winnies instead of stuff that smells and looks like caca...

If you want a bait that works, Hands Down, Get some Big Marv's, If you want a bait that might work, do what you have to do.

as for fresh shad being the best of all, I wish I could net them as easily as some on this forum imply..I can actually throw a net halfway decent sometimes...but I never get any good shad in it. perch once in a while...but rarely shad.

Seems like all the problems fall back to one person. New owner. Bait went to [censored], and so did the magazine. Bunch of false promises.

Allan your right ..until it gets hot.....watch the tourney trails during the summer and see who is winning....shad during the winter and spring...you bet...but summer months punch bait...why do you think all the guides on Tawakoni fish punch bait during the summer ? It produces more fish during that time.....I just talked to one of the Top guys that fishes and wins with shad I dont want to drag his name into this...but he wins alot and is one of the best catfisherman that I have met and he told me just that ...summer months the punch bait fisherman out fish the shad fisherman......

But what bait catches the bigger fish?

just reread your post and your point was shad for big fish...I would have to agree...with that being said.. during the summer the big fish are harder to find...punch bait produces numbers ...and some big fish....

sounds good! yeah, I really would like to be shown how to catch some shad! but ill be bringing some big marvs just in case....

If you are asking about in the summer months Caney....I would say punch bait...thats why the punch bait fisherman are winning...I fished last year in a local tourney the shad guys lead for the first three or four months ....I fished punch bait and by the October tourney I was in the lead for the season...held off the shad guys for the last month although they did bring in bigger fish in October....and beat me that month...
I fished the NTTC and Centeral catfish trail this year and started out fishing punch bait....I found out real quick that if I was going to compete with the shad fisherman in the winter months I would need to fish with shad....during that time...
