I bought a couple of the strike king jugs at walmart today. Planning on setting them out while we are chasing the sandies and hybrids at Richland Chambers. What kind of bait should I put on them?

When I make my jugline weights, I use a 12oz dixie cup with concrete in it to the top with some old romex wire with the insulaton still on it, it works great & will not get burs on it to cut the line! Michael, I understand what you mean about the people that scatter jugs in the navigation lanes on the lake, before I misunderstood your complaints! I use about 10-12 juglines well placed in several different depths, with several different baits on them. Some are in 4-8ft of water for yellowcat & some along dropoffs on the edge of channels close to deep water. I make my own jugs out of my wife;s empty laudry soap jugs that are white, they hold up better & longer than bleach jugs seems like! I only fish when it is not too hot & humid due to a lung condition I have & I do not leave my stuff in the water to become garbage either & I despise those that are too damn lazy to do it right too! Good luck fishing & hope ya find ya a good guitar worth the money! I suggest trying pawn shops for a guitar, the best place to find a good deal! ImHO!

When the water is cold the fish will go deaper, not sure about that deap though. I tried running them at 90 feet a few times on Texoma and never caught anything.

Try Chicken Liver or Gizzards. May not get the big 20 and 30 pounders, but you should have pretty good luck in the 2-10 pound range.

Just remember get rid of that kite string that come with those jugs and buy some heavier line, braided seems to last longer for me, but twisted seems to be a big favorite too.

When I was a kid, I caught another kid running my lines, walked up, said "Congratulations on my 7 pound channel cat", then prmptly began to destroy my fishing rod on whatever part of his body I could it. Needless to say he showed up at school the next day looking like his dad severely abused him.

Other than that one time I have never had issues with people messing with my lines, at least that I know of.

I've caught fish as deep as 125' deep. It's not easy running or making a jug line that deep though and can be dangerous because you need a heavy weight Etc.
We place a couple by the dam on Travis sometimes looking for the big one. Always have better luck in 8-14' though.

I will never use anything less than a gallon jug. I prefer 1 1/4 gallon jugs with 300-400# mono and 10/0 swordfish circle hooks.

The big cats will take under anything smaller and get it hung up. I'm only after the big ones though.

I keep seeing a max number of hooks per jug as being five, but if your fishing as some are in 3-8ft of water how many do you actually put on your jugs?

at that depth i would use 1 hook & i never use more than 2 ... i have around 35 feet of line on my jugs & on most of them i have a placed fixed for only 3 hooks ... 1 a couple of feet off bottom, 1 about 10 feet up from that & another about 10 feet up from that ... but i still only put 2 hooks on

The law says a max number of 5 hooks per jug. Doesn't mean you should always use 5.

I have between 30 and 40 foot of line on my jugs, usually fish in 20-30 foot. My hooks are at 5 and 10 foot from the bottom. I also never run more than two, mainly because I don't care to have hooks dug into my hands while fighting a big fish.

With my configuration, and my boat, when the second hook is at the gunnels the first hook is right near the surface of the water, and flailing fish should be prettu close to having it's head out of the water and at the end of it's fight. If not I just cut the hook off of that second look and continue the fight.

With more that two hooks I would still have the fish several feet under water and fighting. Had a trotline once as a kid that hooked a 29# Flathead. W/ 25 hooks on it and the fish on the next to last hook let's just say it was an interesting fight.

I've done some jug fishing on the Devil's River with 10" - 15" of line & one hook - usually do quite well. If you put jugs in a lake, how deep do you want to go? Do you put them at 30' in 90' of water? What keeps them from getting all wrapped up in the trees? I'm gonna spend a considerable amount of time at Ivie this summer & would like to perfect the open water/lake technique.

Thanks in advance!

This summer you will learn quickly about the thermocline. Its a layer of water where a fish cannot live due to low O2. Pretty much limits juglining to 15 feet or less.
