Kerry.. Also be aware there will be lots of loaner rigs to fish with on the Big E.. we can only use one rod at a time and most have back ups. I will have a couple of Custom Jig rods from Bar Bar Tackle test rods to loan. I also have a Bar Bar Tackle 6ft 30-80 Graphite Composite Jig rod for sale $150 that was a test rod we used on the Tuna 6 Trip. It has a Triangle fore grip, Fuji Palming real seat with trigger and ALPS guides. Black wraps on Black blank. You don't have to break the bank just get the basics.. We fish as a group and give eachother what ever is needed to make the trip a success. Some times it's best to use several different loaner rigs on your first Tuna trip to get a feel for what you like... then buy according to what fits your style best. Bazz

You've got your three basic rigs, now get some line, jigs, poppers and designer hooks. You'll need your 60 to 200, 200 to 400,and 400 to 600 jig rod. Your 50# popper. Your 80# popper. Your 50# chunk as well as the 80# you have. You'll need about 50 jigs (that is the average lost to cuda's). About 12 poppers. Oh, you'll also need at least 3 hooks.

Sometimes the barracudas can be plentiful! I've never needed 50 Jigs, but I always take around 20 to 25. Awfully darn heavy!! But if you run out on the boat, somebody always has some you can borrow or buy!

I think on the last trip I lost 2 jigs. The previous 3 trips I lost maybe 3 or 4 on each trip. All depends on if the toothy ones show up hungry.

Off shore Tuna Jigging tips.... If you drop a Jig straight down on the down current side.. you will feed the Cudas as the jig starts flashing near the surface.. Cast your jig out away from the lights so that your bait enters the boat lights down about 150- 200ft. The Toothy critters are near the top of the water column. The Cudas will still get a few when they hit the smaller Tuna or when you reel in for another cast.. but casting away from the lights will limit Cut-Offs to a minimum. I lost Zero Jigs to Cudas last 3 trips at night and only one in the day time when I cast too close to the rig tempting fate.. Fate Won that round. We did have some Glow in the dark Orange Squid playing tag with our jigs at Boudreaux, strange bite! Bazz

Does anyone ever wire their jigs? Where is the typical bite off in relation to the jig. Within 6 inches of the jig? Or is is like those pesky needlefish bite offs where they actually attack the line?

Hey Mel,
You can wire your jigs, but it will probably decrease your bites. When I get bit off, it's usually right above the solid ring.
I usually don't lose more than a few inches of my short leader.
