/agree with all the posts. The fact still remains that American Oil companies record billions of dollars in profit for a quarter.
You may not think a president could stop this now becuase our current one is NOT stopping it (negligence IMO), but election time someone will chill these gas prices out you can bet on it.
Anyone running for president better be promising to do something if they want to get elected and most likely they will. So once again why is our current president not stopping it now?
Alternative fuels/battery cars etc it's still cheaper to drive gassers at this time.
Supply and demand-ya to a certain extent. WE ALWAYS HAVE A NEED FOR GAS !!!! So stop hosing us for record profits EVERY quarter.

We won't drill off florida but china is their right now. The Question is Who should be doing it. I know we will do a better job than them. If they leak oil we are to blame and I think they don't care.

Wow, (Fishing and Politics) Can we agree on 1 thing. Gas companies should be limited on profit margins. Gas @ 3.00 a gallon $1.57 cents is pure profit. and I'll give you guy's 30 seconds to guess who is the major Exxon/Mobil stock holder. Buy some if you can? The $1.57 for $3/per gal gas is spot on (52%) but it is misleading to say pure profit. From that comes wages, R&D, and a host of other things an ongoing business concern must incur. However, it is obscene they make almost $20Bil a quarter which is net profit from less than $1.57 of pure profit. BTW, who are the major stockholder(s)? A short and good read is http://edition.cnn.com/2005/EDUCATION/08/15/extra.gas.prices/index.html

I've had to limit my trips to the slips, LL Barge, or any creeks because of these nutso gas prices. Hear it may get to $4 by Summer. Ugh...

I heard a nearly overlooked comment on a discovery channel show the other day. The comment was that we have 30-40 decades worth of oil left in the earth..
The use of measureing in decades is interesting, because when you hear "30-40" you thing WOW that's not long, but when you look at the full term you see 300-400 YEARS!!!
If there truly is 300 years of oil left in the earth, then there is absolutely no shortage of oil. If you look at technology over the past 300 years and project achievements into the future, oil isn't even a consideration....
So all this talk about oil shortages and stuff comes down to a ploy to either drive prices up, or give reasons for already high prices or excuses for not building more refineries.

Presuming the comment is correct, there are still major obstacles to overcome. It takes massive R&D to get to these oil reserves. With oil over a hundred, that is why a lot of drilling is going on in known oil reserves but weren't drilled earlier - it was just to costly.
And still more technology has to be developed to get beyond these oil deposits.
It is a complicated subject. I think of it in medical terms. It takes years of R&D and $ before a drug is brought to market. Even when the drug is available there are generally consequences (side effects) and the same can be said of oil (environmental impacts, etc.).
No silver bullets on the horizon that I can see. But it amazes me we put a man on the moon 39 years ago. Just think if we collectively put our resources together what could be done to 'fix' some of our problems.
I remain hopeful though.
