I think it was a mid-20 lb buff. It was fine.

The caudal fin itself is designed to displace as much water as possible with each stroke. The fish still displaces water, although not as efficiently (especially with that buff). Fish with little to no tail tend to use more short, swift strokes over long, slow ones to swim through the water. A split fin doesn't do much damage to a big fish, and, if the split isn't too deep into the caudal peduncle, it will grow back together over time.
