Varner hit the head on the nail. The alot of the problem with lakes that stock hybrids is what Varner stated. Many of the people dont know the difference between a hybrid and a sandbass. I think most that fish for hybrids realize in order to keep up a good fishery we need to only take what we will use or need.

As far as Hubbard goes it has a very strong hybrid fishery and has for as long as I can remember fishing it. I think the reason you have found the hyrbids on a consistant basis now has more to do with learning the lake more then the fishery being poor. And if your fishing around Varner I can see why.

Hybrids taste great, if the red line is big then cut it out prior to cooking. If you want great tasting fish co with crappie, yellow cat, flounder or red fish. MMMMMmmmmm!

I agree with most of the comments above...maybe because my problem is I am such an agreeable guy bang
I dont own a freezer and so I usually take home enough for a meal because we prefer fresh catch and also maybe a couple of fish for grandma. But I do earn some (fishing) browning points for bring home something.

For me, I prefer saltwater fish (flounder, salmon, seabass, etc). But my wife and son do like grilled hybrid, and its quicker and easier for me to fillet and easier on the grill. Below is what she did with the last hybrid I brought home... its basically Tony Chachere's cajun seasoning with italian dressing. Quick and easy to prepare.

Most of the hybrids at RH are 3 or 4 year old fish.

At 3-4 yrs old they should be good size by now 5lb+ and with the ##'s that they stocked in 04 and 05 there "should" be plenty of them.

I agree with Varner. I don't know how many times someone has shown me big sandies, that turned out to be 16" to 17" hybrid's hammer It's amazing how many people fish and don't know the size and bag limits of what they are catching. I can see where Super Duck is coming from, though. A little awareness, can go a long ways. I'm not saying not to keep hybrids, just make sure you are going to eat them and that you are within the legal limits. It's very hard for some fisherman to release fish. I have sometimes seen a pile of sandies/hybrids dumped on the boat ramp, where I load in. I can only guess that whoever did this, realized after they got back to dock, that they didn't want to clean fish or didn't even plan on eating them. Doing something like that is pathetic mad Nevertheless, lets all get ready to enjoy the spring fishing that is almost upon us thumb

Well said. thumb

After someone called me, "the Lake Police" because of my frowning on people that kept them, I have way lightened up.

Just really remember what it was like when I wasn't catching any. cry

Some well written responses, I personally release most of the fish I catch. This is only because the family will not eat them. The ones I keep I generally give to my brother or some a friend.

I love to each fish, but I don't want to waste the fish, so the ones I keep are generally eaten in a day or two.

I also agree that harvesting any fish for consumption is a personal decision, as long as it is within the laws. And yes I have made mistakes in the past on harvesting fish, but this generally has happened in Salt Water. You will be amazed how much a juvenile snapper looks like a lane snapper. Won't make that mistake again, fortunately it was a very understanding Warden.

Heat a large iron skillet on high till it starts smoking.
Cut trimmed hybrid fillets into three pieces.
Brush the meat side of the fillets with real butter.
Spray the skillet liberally with PAM or other nonstick.
Place the fillets in the skillet skin side down. Thicker pieces in the middle and tail pieces around the perimeter.
Dust with Tony Cachere's cajun seasoning. I like to use a little salt also, but that's just me.
Cook till the edges start to turn white then flip.
Lightly brush with butter.
Continue cooking until the thicker pieces are flaky.
No need to season the skin side.

This usually happens every time I bring a few fish home. They never see the freezer.

BTW, I like my LMB steamed.LOL

Yep, thanks MrG.
