my dad has a 2000 7.3L Powerstroke. it does have a Super Chip and a bigger pipe on it. when it is cold. and when he starts it in the morning after about 40-60 seconds the RPM's will raise.
why is it doing this?

Mine does the same and I have the no chip and the stock pipe. I just always assumed that it's the fast idle working to bring the engine up to temperature just like a gasoline engine would.

Completely normal, don't know why; however, ours has done it since day one it is a 2000 year model as well with 135,000 miles and going strong. Don't have the chip.....

It idles up to protect the motor. Something about the way they idle and oil or something. Someone with more knowledge can tell you the specifics but they all do it. My old 7.3 did and my 6.4 does too.

The ONLY thing I miss about the 7.3 is the fuel mileage...that is the only place the 7.3 will beat the 6.4, this thing is AWESOME. Except at the fuel pump bang

they idle themselve up due to low combustion chamber temps. once it sences the the correct ambient temp, she'll calm back down

He's right, it's the computer telling it tto do that. My 5.9 cummins would also idle up after a few min idling on real cold days for the same reason. The first time it did it, I thought it was posessed.

Jeff, the stock Dodges don't usually have that feature turned on but any dealer can do it. Mine has never done it. Its also not to heat the combustion chamber but to warm the motor up.
In temps below 20 or so I can leave mine at idle for 30 minutes and it barely reads on the temp scale. Not good so I just start driving SLOWLY as soon as the engine stabilizes. Usually within 5 seconds.

With common rail engines (03-04)they would idle themselvs up to
1000 rpms after a minute of so of idleing, but the air temp. has to be below 50 degrees. The 04.5's and later had the feature where you could use the cruise to idle them up at any time, but the dealer had to enable this feature.
