I bought a 1985 toyota 4 wheel drive truck, with manual. One time I rented a small boat and took it down to the Ohio river. It was on the boat ramp, with the boat in the water, and me trying to unstrap when I discovered the parking brake didn't hold. I was able to brace against the tailgate and stop it from rolling into the water until a good samaritan noticed what was happening, ran over, jumped into the truck and got it in gear and pulled up off the ramp.
I still went fishing after I found a piece of wood big enough to block the back tire so I could unload the boat.
After I got home, I spent about 200 dollars fixing the parking brake. The cables, bellcranks and pivots were shot. Ended up rebuilding the brakes on every wheel.
So, if anyone else buys a 20 year truck, check the brakes, and rebuild them anyway. Even if the shadetree mechanic says they look good.
