greg i use shot on straight down fishing . you will be able to tell a bite because it will feel different when that hapopens, and that will tell you its time to set the hook .

Have to agree with jesse. I also keep an eye on my line and rod tip at all times. It takes practice to know what you are feeling and seeing.
