I had the same problem last year. Instead of taking the boat apart to get the code, I just took it up to a local Merc dealership and they brought out one of each key code until we found the one that fit. If my memory serves me right, there were 10 different ones. I took all of 2 minutes and cost me less than $5. I don't know if the same thing holds true for other brands of outboards, but I suspect it does.
BTW - I did take the title with me so they knew I had not stolen the boat.....

Yes, RB7764, I did the same thing, walked out with two new keys for under 6 bucks!!! Happy customer!

Was is a Mercury, Evinrude, or Yamaha. If you didn't write it down in your manual. Look at your serial # and contact the appropriate dealer. They can tell get you a key at a reasonable price. It will be something like 1A, 2C, 3B, etc. Numerous combinations. When you get it this time, right that number down in your manual.
