Have you notified TPWD??? Was the fish weighed with a certified scale? If that is a smallmouth it is a lake record. If it is some kind of black bass hybrid that is a record also. Whatever that is it is real special at 7lbs! If it wasn't weighed with a certified scale and handed over to TPWD I am gonna be heart broken.

Since the lower jaw extends beyond the eye it is most likely not a full on smallmouth. I have never even heard of a brown largemouth though. Maybe someone more knowledgeable than I will explain.

You're right about the mouth hinge - a smallmouth's mouth hinge doesn't even come to the eye. A largemouth that's been feeding near a sewer outlet mistaking ____ for Baby Ruth's?

That fish in Bret's picture looks like it's smiling, kind of creepy.

That's one freaky looking pig there, Ronnie. I agree that it certainly doesn't look like a pure smallie. Even the upper jaw protrudes beyond the eye (only LMB do that). The markings do look a lot like a grouper or a salt water Rock Bass (West Coast).

this thread was just messin around to add some humor to the forum. I caught the Yellowmouth grouper on the Cinco Tuna trip last May. I think we were around the "Flower Gardens" area.. see the strawberry grouper Senko has hanging.... thats the state record.... hes the true hero in this thread!!

I think the state may have crossed some over the years. Don't know for sure. I know there were some experimenting with that in the early 90's
