When did that become such a thing? If you are driving in the rain with your hazard lights on, are you trying to tell me that it’s raining? Are you telling me to use extra caution? Are you worried that the other vehicles around you can’t see you so the blinking hazard lights make you more visible?

I definitely need some clarification here.

To me it means they’re going much slower than the flow of traffic or speed limit because of the conditions.

They don’t want to get smoked because someone wasn’t expecting how slow they were going…

I don’t usually do it, but I have turned my hazards on if the traffic on the interstate comes to a standstill and there is traffic quickly approaching me from behind. Mostly because I got smoke hauling my boat by someone that flew up on me from behind.

I appreciate it when people do it.

In my mind; if I see someone driving with hazards blinking; it means your vehicle is in some stage of failure/not operating to full capacity….headlights/tail lights not working well/gears not shifting correctly/brakes not great.

I was taught that people driving with their hazard lights on were having some type of vehicle malfunction or they were in some type of emergency situation and should be given the right of way whenever possible.

I guess a heavy rain can slow down some but not all, but when you get a good solid 8-12+ inches of snow and the plows haven’t caught up yet, you have some that can barely move and others that are going the speed limit or more, it makes sense in that sort of condition for the slow folks to have them on, especially if they are going under the min. Speed limit and the visibility is also reduced.

Just think if the striper boats had hazard lights... Isn't that what everyone wants???... A safety feature for every possible situation we may ever encounter or could dream of encountering???...

But back to the OP... It's a safety feature to alert other driver... Dan

If you’re a hazard (also known as emergency lights in different parts of the country) you shouldn’t be on the road.

Only ever put the hazards on during real frog choker rains, like deluge stuff.

I just assume they are not Native Texans and idiots, so I give them plenty of room.

If you've ever seen an accident scene where a big truck or someone going really slow was rear ended by someone going the speed limit you'd understand why it is a good thing.

I think it’s a thing in other parts of the country and they’re here now.

Sounds like a Metromess problem since there is no 3 second separation rule there for sure. Seems pretty simple to me. Plenty of folks activate their hazard lights here in West Texas when encountering poor weather that greatly reduces visibility (rain, fog, snow, dust storm etc). It's simply easier to see a flashing light than a non one. Now, on a clear day, if someone is activating their hazard lights, my head is on a swivel since I have no clue what is ahead of me, beside me, or in the vehicle that activated their hazard lights in front of me.
