Okay I haven't been saltwater fishing in almost 40 years since I moved away from Houston. Tell me a descent set up for inshore fishing, specs and reds etc... Spin cast and bait cast and line Thanks

I use an Abu Garcia 6500 baitcaster on a med 6โ6โ Ugly Stik with 20 pound Berkley Big Game mono line. It has been great for everything inshore.

Spinning rods get the work for plastics. 2500 series reel w/20# braid. Casting get the topwater and spoons. Regular bass reels w/15# ande back country.
Spinning rods are 7 & 7 1/2โ L or ML Casting are 6 1/2 M or 7โ ML
Thatโll catch anything in the bay.

I use a shimano stradic 3000 on a 7 medium Star Rods, Stellar Lite for trout, snook, reds, and small tarpon.. Bass Pro carries them.. but I just order direct from website... beautiful light weight rods that hold up... rod rated for 10/20 lb test line but I usually have 30 lb braid and just vary my leader.

I'll defer to the above gents. They will steer you right for sure. My current go to is a 6501 mounted to a 7' Falcon Coastal XG medium heavy. Relatively inexpensive rig for under 3 bills. 15 lb big game in the bay but I load it with 20 on the beach. I have an all star 7' medium lite with a garcia revo for back up. I used to use it extensively under pink cajun thunder corks, but I went back to the medium heavy. It works well with the corks and especially with the spooks I'm fond of throwing. Plus, a good red will walk you all around the boat with a lite. I like the lite though, works well on trout, but I seem to get a better hook set with the medium heavy when throwing arties. My wife also fishes with a baitcaster. It's a cheap black max garcia. It's held up though. I crank the magnets on it, and she does pretty well after she gets warmed up. She's using a 7' Daiwa medium heavy. My son also uses the black max on a 7' Coastal XG. All my reels are left hand retrieve. For terminal tackle, I try to stay away from swivels and use the uni to uni knot. Other knots are the palomar, trilene and loop. I almost always use a flouro leader. I do that even on the fly rod. Again, the guys above are your go to for the best info. This is just what I have found works for me. Welcome and good luck.

It's all personal favorites and what's worked for you. We really only throw two plastics, norton sand eel and hogie super minnow. I like a bit stiffer rod for the sand eel, gives a little better dart action. Softer rod for the hogie, tends to not dislodge out of bigger trout as easy. Topwater I like a bit stiffer rod to give it the right action, little softer for spoons. When I rig up the mauler corks for one of the girls, little stiffer rod is easier for them to handle. We never mess with leaders, braid gets tied straight to the jig head. If someone tears me up using a leader I'll give it a thought, but it's yet to happen. Main thing, your reel needs a good, smooth drag. There's zero reason to try to horse in a big red, or trout, let them fight it out, there's nothing for them to hang on, so let them play. ![[Linked Image]](https://i.ibb.co/XVWF6rx/Kelly-Red-Fish.jpg)

Just to be clear, the reason I use the flouro leader is thr same reason I use steel on this trolling lure. Abrasion and cut resistance. Since I use mono, I can run a 15 lb line with a short 20 lb leader. At the beach, I bump up the line to 20 and the leader to 30 or 40. ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2025/04/full-100487-266464-img_0853.jpeg)

6โ6โ to 7โ6โ ft with a 2500 spinning reel with 20# Suffix 832. Falcon Coastal are good rods for the price.
Spend more on a good bait caster combo. Waterloo 6โ9โ Slam Mag and Shimano SLX DC. 30# Suffix 832.
