Is it just me or is the amount of local tournaments down from years past? Sure, the trails and clubs are still around. But it seems there aren't too many opens anymore.

Seems to me that the smaller trails are being consumed by those that average 25 boats or more consistently and have better payouts.

Could it maybe be due to its still pretty early in the year? Possibly, March and April is primetime though. I definitely remember a lot more open tournaments this time of year. This was several years ago though, I haven't fished much in a couple years.

I think a factor a lot of people overlook is just overall lack of interest.... I use to be hellbent about tournaments, I couldn't even sleep the night before. I think ive talked myself into entering 4 little ones this year... won 2 of them and got 2nd in another...... did absolute nothing for me besides I was able to tell my wife that I paid for the rest of the years boat gas.
Its hard to beat a good fun day on the water with no stress, a lot of fish catches and not being on a time clock. I didn't know how happy fishing could make me until I put tournaments on the back burner in a major way. Wished I had of learned this sooner. Trust me Im as mad at them as ever and always on the water before daylight when I fish but when I put the boat on the water its just me against the fish and its brought me more joy and its made me 10x a better fishermen.

Fished a tournament last year with my grandson, we weighed in a small limit. I wasn't real happy about it and felt I should have done better. The next afternoon I was driving home, replaying the event in my head and trying to see what adjustments I should have made, when it hit me. My grandson (9 at the time) threw a swim jig all day. He caught 3 fish, one of them kept, and to him, it was a GREAT day. He didn't really care that we didn't cash a check or win, he had a great day because he went fishing and caught some fish. I've been fishing tournaments for 30 years, I've won some, cut some checks and been humbled at some. I think I've become jaded and forgot why I started doing it in the first place. Took a nine year old to remind me why we do it.......

Lots of people cannot afford to fish them anymore. It doesn’t cost that much. A few hundred on a weekend. Hell….it costs $100 to take my wife out for dinner every Friday.
Eat. Sleep. Fish.

Believe it or not $100 is a lot of money for some. As for local tournaments dropping, I think its just a sign of the times. During Covid it seemed like everyone wanted to fish, now hardly any does. I'm in two local clubs that both hold monthly tournaments with a $30 entry fee. One used to regularly have 25 or more enter almost every month, The other was a little smaller club but still had 15-20 enter regularly. Now both are hard pressed to get 10 to sign up.
