After spending a week on Fork fighting wind with my hand controlled Riptide, I think I’m about ready to move up in the trolling motor world. I simply want foot control capability and spot lock. Without going into full on detail… As much as I’d like to get an Ultrex, it’s just not a viable option for the way my front deck is designed. On top of that, being that I fishing the coast for trout/reds on a rare occasion, I really don’t want a permanently mounted Ultrex on the bow. I’d prefer it to be removable on a quick release so I can put my Riptide back on if I do decide to go to the saltwater. Or, just get a Riptide Terrova that I can leave on there no matter what. With that said, I think the Terrova with the foot pedal is going to be the best option for my situation. I’m just wondering if any of y’all guys fish with a Terrova and what y’all think of it with the foot pedal. Mostly wondering about being able to steer through stumps/around docks/etc… and if they hold up well. I’ve also seen how much of a mess it is to mount a transducer on the bottom of them. I really don’t like the “solutions” I’ve seen, especially those big hideous aluminum bracket things with the coiled cable. Thanks for input

Foot pedal on the Terrova is slower, sluggish when compared to conventional and cable assist foot control like the Ultrex. I have the foot pedal on my Majek Extreme. I thought I would use it B.A.S.S. fishing. I don’t. I got it from a guy that thought he would use it.
I doubt you will like it.

I have used them and Ulterras for years. I use the remote when fishing. Now I have the ultrex and I still use the remote

I doubt you will like it. So you just use the remote control on the Terrova? I’m really wanting to get away from controlling a TM with my hands Since you have an Extreme you can probably see why I say the Ultrex wouldn’t be the best option. I thought about cutting into the lid on the anchor box and putting a recess if I were to go with an Ultrex. Not only do I not really want to cut into my boat, I also don’t really enjoy the idea of dunking a $3000 freshwater trolling motor into saltwater (though I rarely do fish saltwater anymore.)

Settling for a Terrova vs Ultrex for bass fishing is like buying a new car, in Texas, and being too cheap to pay for A/C

Now that was funny! I'm hell on trolling motors, and the ultrex can take it. With the right plate setup, you should be fine.

I have had a hand control TM the last 15 years and foot control 12 before that. I understand the pain especially in the wind and have considered going back as well. But at 60 I'm not sure I can go back to standing on one foot all day again.

Understood! It’s not really a matter of being too cheap, it’s more of a matter of trying to mount that thing to my boat lol. I did a little more reading on the Ultrex this morning though. It looks like it CAN be installed to a quick release mount, the same one that I already have I believe. That changes quite a bit, because in that case I can just put disconnects on the power cables for when I need to remove it to throw that old Riptide back on. Then it’s just a matter of if I can put in a recess pan in the anchor box up front for the pedal. I could probably just use some super heavy duty velcro to make the pedal easily removable. Here’s a picture of my deck currently so y’all can see what I’m talking about ![[Linked Image]](https://texasfishingforum.com/forums/pics/userpics/2025/03/full-100653-264136-img_1149.jpeg)

Yeah, an Ultrex is not the right motor for that boat. I'd find a riptide terrova and get it.

I just put a quick release mount on and I really like it. Make sure you know that that Terrova has that release lever and you have to pull the shaft up thru EVERY time you deploy and stow it. I had a powerdrive that stows like that and just got an Ulterra. Like you I cant fund a Ultrex. I got real tired of the way it deployed and thus Terrova was not even an option for me.

It all depends on the style of lakes you fish- running in and out around docks all day long is not fun on a terrova/ ulterra style foot pedal- and the remote is even worse, ultrex is hands down 10x easier to fish with. An ultrex will work fine on that boat that’s what I’d get unless you fish mostly open water.

Thank y’all for your replies. Is mounting an external transducer on an Ultrex the same kind of headache as it is on the Terrova? Also what about adding LiveScope. Don’t have that yet, that’ll be by next investment after a new trolling motor. Is one easier/cleaner than the other to have a Livescope setup mounted to? I think I’d prefer a seperate pole for the LiveScope transducer when I get there. Using that mounted to the TM with spot lock sounds useless.

I've got a used 36V Ultrex I would sell for $850. Upgraded to the Quest. It's got a 60" shaft but if that's too long any TM shop can but it down for $100 or less. Has the remote. The 2D Tranducer in the foot doesn't work the cord was cut off during a repair. It was new in 2018.

I had a riptide on my bay boat. I did a lot of bass fishing. The main issues I had was I couldn't attach a 360 or lives scope. Also picking it up was a pain. The foot pedal was nice and I never used the remote but since it didn't sit in the deck the height was a little more then I liked. At the end of the day I tried to turn a bay boat into a bass boat and it worked but wasn't fun . I have a bass boat now and it makes bass fishing much more enjoyable. When I do go to the coast I pay for a guide.
