Way back when I was a E-3 Seaman, Kitty Wells would come to the EM Club at NAS Kingsville and play free. She did that at least 3 or 4 times while I was there.

Conway Twitty story....back in 60's/70's I worked for the A.C.Nielsen co. and spent some time in Clarksdale,Ms. which is in northern part of the Miss. Delta not far from Miss. river....someone told me about a new restaurant near Moon lake about 15 miles iorth of Clarksdale...I went there for dinner one night and it was a new restaurant....the walls were pine paneling and they had a lot of Conway Twitty pictures on the walls...I was about the only person in the restaurant...food was good and when I was almost finished a nicely dressed older lady came out and asked if everythig was ok and how I liked the food....everything was good and I told her so plus commented they must me be big fans of conway Twitty and she replied "that's our son"... .we had a long conversation...she told me Conway whose real name was Harold Jenkins had wanted a guitar as a kid and they got him one when he was young (I think she said 8 years old)..he taught himself to play the guitar and sing...he joined the Army out of high school, tried out for and was asked to join their entertainment company which traveled all over the world entertaining troops... a talent scout introduced him to an agent in New York who convinced him to change his name to Conway Twitty helped him produce records and get concert bookings.... didn't ask but am sure Conway financed the restaurants opening......unfortunately the restaurant closed after a few years and I'm told that a very popular honky tonk was in business there for many years...

You can shut this thread down and lock it, because nothing is as terrible as this...

George Jones "HSLHT" is, and very rightfully should be, at the very top of these lists when they pop up. When Possum really laid into a song, you thought you were watching the saddest movie in the world. That's how well he could sing 'em when he tried. Hell, he could easily take of 3, maybe 4 spots on most top 10 of all time lists.
However, any Top 10 list without a Vern Gosdin entry just can't be a legitimate list. Vern's "Do you believe me now" is one helluva song.

And for the record, George’s quote on “HSLHT” was this -
“I didn’t want to sing it because I thought the song was the most morbid son of bish I’d ever heard and nobody would wanna listen to it!”
He also stated that it took him a few years to learn to sing the song how it needed to be sung. He said when he finally figured that part out, the rest was history.

George Jones - He stopped loving her today. #1 ranked country song by a mile according to writers. I have a few hundred from the 70’s thru the 90’s that are hands down better than anything put out since then. Doubtless

When I was almost finished a nicely dressed older lady came out and asked if everything was ok and how I liked the food. Pics of lady?
