Am I wrong to think an extra fast rod would do better at driving a hook into a fish?

Is this for a worm, or jig type application?

Not wrong at all but keeping it pinned will depend on the type of hook.

I use 17 pound line for T Rigs and started breaking off way to many fish on the hook set with an extra fast rod. No matter how hard I tried to tell myself to let up a little on the hook set I couldnt do it so went back to a standard fast. The extra fast rods now have braid and they get used for frogs and thick matted punching.

What about an extra fast spinning rod for flukes?

Extra fast can cause problems…..especially if it’s not a fine wire hook (like on a drop shot)

Imagine you are trying to pierce a piece of your own skin.
A soft all fleshy part, like an ear lobe…sure extra fast would work great.

But, if it’s a tough, thick or bony part; you would want a slower, more sustained building, burrowing pressure.

I prefer moderate fast for flukes….they will ball up at times…you have to penetrate through the fluke and then sometimes into a thick, bony part of the fish’ mouth.

Extra fast would be good for exposed thin wire hooks like on drop shot and traditional NED rig.

The speed rating is how fast the rod loads up….and how far up the rod it loads. A fast tip is probably better for a medium spinning rod. XF would hard to keep a fish hooked up with on a spinning rod. You want the rod to bend and allow its power to control the hook and fish. I’d be concerned about a finesse rod having too much tip with smaller hooks.

That’s why they print the technique on the rod…for guys like me.

A friend gave me an older 6'6" BPS rod that was a medium action and it said it was for worms and jigs. Been a good jerkbait and rat'l trap rod though.

Weightless fluke

I couldn't figure it out either with GLoomis NRX's so I bought 2 of almost every model. I'll get it right eventually

Pretty much how I solved the Falcon code. I have a few that have one cast on them. I’ll never use them.

I've used an XF rod for many years now on Texas rigs, jigs abd even frogs with zero issues. Frthe most part there is no industry standards so one company's fast might be another company's XF and so forth.

Unfortunately sometimes the best way to decide if it will work for you is to try it out.
