Best ones are those with the grease zerk on the axle. Greases from the inside out new greases forces out the old. With buddy bearings new grease goes on top of the old. Greasing to the point of blowing out the seals causes more issues than just about anything else.

Salt water is the devil. 😈

My Coastline trailer has Rockwell American torsion axles with Rock Solid hubs. Dexter brought Rockwell American and discontinued the Rock Solid ones as they are similar to the Dexter vault hubs which lube through a zerk on the end of the axle. Some Torsion axles have spindles which can be replaced, others have spindles that can’t. The ones on my trailer can’t.

I did the full maintenance a few months back. Followed the manufacturers process exactly . The front left hub failed on a hour trip to the bay. When I stop I just about always check the hubs either with an infrared thermometer or touch them ensure they aren't heating up. They have always been cool. We stopped at Buc-cees about 30 minutes away from the ramp. Didn’t check them. Looked at them before leaving to return home. “Damn bearing failed.

Not sure what happened. It appears the inside seal may have failed. Trailer is 6 years old. The spindle got scored to where I don’t want to mess with it. I would be concerned the seal might fail again and quicker because of the spindle.

Going to go ahead and put two new axles under the trailer. Trying to decide between the ones Coastline offers, which I know are an exact for to the existing holes in the trailer but do not have the replaceable spindles or the Dexter ones that McClain has which have replaceable spindles but not sure the holes in the trailer frame line up exactly.

Easy to replace the axles. Dual axle trailer. Remove the wheels on one axles at a time. Four bolts to remove and replace the axle. Put the wheels back on and do the other. About a 1 hr job.

Two axles from McClain are ~$250 more than 2 from Coastline. Replacement spindle is ~$220. Replacement axle is ~$800+.

Did you tighten the castle nut too tight? I did that once on a flatbed trailer. Ran it up the road a couple miles and back after everything was back together just to test it, touched the hub and heard my skin sizzle, SOB was blazing hot.
