Anybody running vaults with Red N Tacky grease?
I’m rebuilding mine and am wondering if yall just pack the bearings and call it good or do you fill the vault cap like you would with the hybrid grease?

I converted my vaults over to regular grease. I use marine Lucas grease. As far as the vault hub I got rid of those and put on bearing buddies. The bearing buddies don’t actually grease the bearings. The bearings are greased when you pack them. The bearing buddy is there apply pressure to the hub so when you back into water it doesn’t come into the hub.
Imagine if you use the vault hub you’d want to pack it cause it functions similar to a bearing buddy and puts positive pressure to the hub. But it’s not really made to be used that way.

I did exactly the same thing you are describing. Red n Tacky, and followed the Vault installation procedure. Reused the vault cap. No more seepage. Hubs run cool to the touch.

That was my plan but was second guessing myself

One of my Vault hubs started to leak so pulled and replaced all inner seals and repacked the bearings with marine grade grease, installed bearing buddies. Messy job but no more worries of Vault seal letting go 100 miles from nowhere.

Ran mine for 4 yrs no problems. Popped the caps and added some lithium grease last month, wasnt that hard to just fill them up. Actually they hardly needed any grease!

Seems like most Florida trailer shops do not recommend Vaults, not sure why - maybe because of all out brackish water, not sure. Most recommend just standard bearing setup with quality grease, re-packing ever year (or replacing grease with ez-lube fitting if equipped). This seems to be the ticket for minimal axle/hub issues, at least down here.I think same for Bearing Buddies, shops tend to reccommend against them.

I must be in the minority but am still running oil bath with the vault style hubs. Had to replace the o-rings last year with water getting in the port side hub but have never had a problem with the starboard side one in 15 years. Just replace the oil with lucas hub oil every 2 years, don't use normal 90 weight gear oil.

It's always the inner seal that fails... Not hard to repair but the hybrid oil is messy... Dan

My boat is a 2013. It had vault hubs. I never touched them until today. I had them looked at and repaired. Trailer guy said they were in remarkably good shape. He replaced a few things and repacked them. Good to go.
