No Sheeps head look like a black drum (have vertical stripes) and have teeth like a human

Yes, they are sometimes (incorrectly) called that. It can be confusing, though, since there is a saltwater fish which has that name.

In the same way, referring to various sunfish as "perch" can be very confusing when someone wants to talk about actual perch like yellow perch or saugeye.

Here is a little more freshwater drum info: http://www.sfishinc.com/fisht1.htm

A saugeye is a hybrid fish half Sauger and half walleye.

I caught Saugeye last year in the Arkansas River.

You beat me too it! Lol. Up North, people often call Freshwater Drum "Sheepshead". And I heard Bowfin called "Dogfish", and on and on.

It's exactly the same situation as people down here referring to Bluegill, etc, as "Perch". Or another example, people calling Bluegill "Bream" when a "Bream" is actually a European fish related to the Common Carp.

Every region has it's own local names for various fish, I just wish people would come up with names that aren't actually a seperate fish entirely lol.

Back home they were lumped in with Carp, and most of the places I fished as a kid it was "illegal" to throw them back alive. Or at least that's what my Step Father would tell me.

I know one time I tried cooking one on a camp fire, and it tasted horrible. But then so did the carp and the Gar I tried to cook too.

About the only thing I ever cooked on a camp fire that was edible was a Catfish....

And yes, a Saugeye is half Saugeye, Half Walleye...both members of the Perch Family, just like Yellow Perch.

I've filleted small drum, sliced the fillets into chunks, mixed them up with chunks of white bass, fried them together...and enjoyed the entire meal so much I forgot I was supposed to be trying to tell which was which.

Here is a yellow perch from a year ago in Ontario, Canada.

Low up there tonight is expected to be 48˚F, by the way.

One of the best eating freshwater fish. In my opinion its right there with crappie. I had always heard they were boney, NOT. No more bones than any other fish. Flesh is firm and white, none of the red meat you find in sandies, hybrids, stripers and larger cats. Easy to clean just fillet them like any other fish. That being said, I have not eaten one over a couple of pounds. The larger ones may not be as good.

Michial , what were you catching them on? We are always fishing LL and have not seen any of these yet. My buddies have caught some of them but I have not yet.

Can't speak for Michial or to LL, but if I was going to target drum, I'd definitely include live crawfish in the bait mix . . . they'd be top choice.

Most of my drum catches have come (incidentally while targeting catfish) on live or cut shad.

If you have access to any freshwater mollusks (mussels, clams), I bet they'd be good bait, too.

The ones I have been catching have all been on Slabs, usually silver sassy shad slabs.

I've caught one or two on Chartruese.
