Last year, the Dallas Cowboys played the Philadelphia Eagles twice. Dallas scored a combined total of 13 points; Philly 75. Dallas lost both games.

Needing a new head coach, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones interviewed both teams’ offensive coordinators. The one in Philly is in his mid-30s, and is constantly fielding head coaching offers. (He’s currently preparing his game plan for the NFC Championship Game tomorrow.) The one in Dallas is in his 50s, has never been a head coach on any level, and hasn’t interviewed for a head coaching job in over a decade.

My wife is a big Cowboy fan. When the game is on, I go sit on the patio, drink beer, and call my best friend in Texas who also is not a Cowboy fan.

I like any team that will whup up, unmercifully on the Redskins/Commanders. Absolutely humiliate them. I very, very, strongly dislike (hate?) most of whom or what they represent, cuz it ain't the real Americans.

I was out when they fired THE coach.

I don't hate them but that was the day everything changed for the Cowboys.

The Pittsburgh Steelers were originally asked to be named "America's Team" by the NFL, but the team's owner, Art Rooney, declined. Rooney said, "We're Pittsburgh's team". The NFL then asked the Dallas Cowboys to be named "America's Team".
Explanation
The Steelers were a strong NFL team with a record of many Super Bowl wins. However, Rooney, the owner of the Steelers, did not want the team to be called "America's Team". He felt that the team was Pittsburgh's team.
The Dallas Cowboys have used the nickname "America's Team" as a trademark since 1979. The Cowboys are often featured in the NFL on Fox's "America's Game of the Week" due to their national popularity

Wife was a die hard fan for thirty years. She about cried when Jimmy Johnson was let go. Before the 2024 season she said she was done with them. I thought well they’re like a bad habit, you say you’re not revisiting it but you do. She didn’t watch a single game, even though she still loves Cee Dee. Late in the year I’d tell her about a good play, and she’d say “Uh huh”.

I’m also done getting excited about the games. No more getting pumped up or getting mad at them. Mostly have the sound down and check the score late in the game to see if it’s worth the watch. Was a fan for 50 + years.

That would be Bob Ryan, who was then an employee at NFL Films and later became the company's Vice President and editor-in-chief. Following the 1978 season, at the end of which Dallas lost to the Pittsburgh Steelers in the Super Bowl, Ryan was putting together the team's highlight reel and noticed a lot of people wearing Dallas gear in opposing stadiums.

Needing some extra narration for the commentary, the name just came to him, as he later expressed in an interview.

""I saw all these fans in away stadiums. "Hey, they're the most popular team in the country. How can I use that? Why don't we call them America's Team?""
Bob Ryan, NFL Films
During the Cowboys' 1979 season opener against the then-St. Louis Cardinals, legendary broadcaster Pat Summerall, who was calling the game for CBS, referred to Dallas as America's Team, and, for better or worse, it's been a thing ever since.
