Standing seam is best roof you can have but cost is prohibitive unless you already have a real high dollar roof already. As mentioned the r-panel’s only real issue when installed right is the washers deteriorating in 12-15 years from our heat and sun then they can start to leak. Can replace screws usually once but normally have to replace a lot bc it’s impossible to tell which one is leaking unless screw backs out or wasn’t installed flush and that happens too. Aster replacing screws once you normally have to getter bigger screws next time if you have to do it again. I’d love a standing seam but not taking a loan out for one.

The roof panels are decoration, the main protection is the underlayment, it must meet astm d 1970 for nail seal ability and it must be high temperature rated and a min of 40 mils thick. The panels should be 24 ga for most residential applications whether it’s a concealed fastened standing seam or an exposed fastened R panel, another panel to consider is a mechanically fastened 5v crimp. Properly fastening is the biggest issue I see on failures, standing seams should be secured with floating / sliding base plates, and placed at most 30 inches on center, closer in the perimeter zone near the eave. Zee closures need to tight to the ribs secured with 4 fasteners and sealed with butyl tape or silicone, if the installer uses polyurethane they are creating leaks.

For the guys replacing R panel fasteners, remember to install fasteners one size larger than the original screws, and make sure your laps are secured at 1’-0 “ on center.

Our house was erected by me from a Mueller kit and framed inside with wood. The roof is R panel and has withstood some fairly large hail in the 25 years since it was built. Still no leaks thankfully!
