Is it a bad idea to charge batteries when temps are below 40 degrees.

Not ideal, but shouldn't be a problem until you get to the 32 degree mark.

I'm going worst case scenario assuming he may have lithium batteries. If that's the case the plating of metallic lithium occurs on the anode during a sub-freezing charge that leads to a permanent degradation in performance and safety.

Thanks. This reminded me of a question I have about lithium’s. Will start a new thread.

If your Lithiums don’t have a BMS, The manufacturer such as Monster Marine says DO NOT charge at 32 degrees or lower. Checked mine this morning after charging for 36 hours and no issues.

All of these marine lithiums will have a BMS. 100% of them. More specifically you need to ensure your battery has LTCP, low temperature charge protection (or cut-off).

If it does not, you can permanently damage your lithium battery by charging it while it's frozen. Either way, it's best to just leave your lithiums alone during weather like this BUT keep your AGM and Lead-Acids plugged in.

But how does all this translate when your batteries are plugged into a Minn Kota precision charger??

Chargers don't care how cold it is.

MinnKota chargers will charge until full, then go into maintenance mode. This is how these chargers keep your batteries in check. The BMS along with the maintenance mode should keep your batteries in check.

From the Ionic page:

Battery Management Systems (BMS) with power terminal cut-off & recovery
Built-in cold weather protection – Does not take a charge if temperatures are below -4C or 24F in our case. Some variations with part tolerances.

Mind you this is internal battery temperature and not outside air temperature.
