33 years in telecom constriction. First 10 years stacking towers from coast to coast...was great. Then 15 years as a carrier construction manager...good money, but burned out. Back in the field for another 5 years split between small cell and its infrastructure...took a year off and it's been great. Now just a lowly paid consultant doing gig work when projects come along. I'd say I've seen some damned interesting things and have a lifetime of stories to tell once I get old.

Equipment distribution is sorely lacking talent. Techs, sales are both in demand

I’ve had some cool jobs. Airborne, Oil and Gas, no train derailments. Love it. [Linked Image]

Yes it was... Got to travel the country, met a lot of good people... Coal fired power plants are interesting place to visit...
They're normally located in the boonies so you're visiting, eating, drinking in small bars and family owned restaurants... Dan

I honestly don’t see the aversion to salesforce. Sales seem to view it as big brother- but it’s not and shouldn’t be viewed that way. It’s a great place to keep all the data accessible to everyone within a company. Everyone wants to work in a silo but it just doesn’t work that way.

I'm working at 7:00 a.m. I usually respond to 50 ish emails a day, 30 odd phone calls, usually have three meetings a day, plus manage projects that are ongoing. I then drive to where I'm at tomorrow, most of the time drag my tail into hotel room at 7 p.m. Do three to five quotes before I can retire for the night. And now you expect me to duplicate everything I just did so you can pass judgement of my efforts? I sent you a copy of my bid, whatever you want is on there, put it in yourself if it's that important to you.

That right there is real life.

I understand exactly what you mean. And it wasn't even ICE yet, when I retired. I loved working sign cut and tracking 'em. Check point not too much.

I have had a lot of jobs over my lifetime, but for the last 30 years I have been in Recruiting and IT Consulting. Started out recruiting Doctors on a national level which allowed me to see almost every state in the union. Switched over to IT in '96 and never looked back. I've been fortunate enough to meet a lot of powerful, high ranking people from Fortune 5 to Fortune 500 companies and most were a pleasure to work with. Downside? You're never off the job. Vacation, evenings, weekends if the phone rings, you answer.

To all of you IT guys on here, I'd love to connect with you. Never know when we could be of help to each other. Send me a PM if you like.

The CRM part of my job is sucking the life out of me and I enjoy it less each day.

Mud's underlined sentence above hit me, as I feel the exact same most days. I'm a fisheries management biologist, consulting for private ponds/lakes through a university in Arkansas for the whole state. The fun days are in the field, shocking fish, investigating fish kills, prescribing weed management plans, surveying build sites, designing stocking and management plans with clients. Most days are spent writing reports, emails, lectures, staring at a monitor with little to no observable physical output to see at the end of the day. I don't get much satisfaction from my digital output, though I understand/appreciate the importance of it. Definitely get to meet cool clients. Everything from just scraping by to high end wealth. Business owners and professionals within the fishing industry are especially fun as we usually just end up talking fishing stuff for an hour on top of the visit. It's like any gig, there's un-fun bits to it but overall it's a cool profession. Fish shocking days photo'd below are the best:

I hope they are paying you really well- that’s a ton of time commitment on your end

In most operations you have sales, and you have processors. The processors believe they are critical. The sales guys know who feeds the tribe.

So the conflicts begin.
Think of your organization like a cave man community. The hunters (sales) just want to go kill all the mammoths they can, drag it back to the cave and go hunt another one. Oh but wait, the processors all met and decided that mammoth could only be brought in after it's been properly dressed, all the meat is cut up and packaged and all they have to do is eat and get fat.

Which one are you?

I get the sentiment- it’s viewed that way by everyone- regardless of the part of the business they are in. In reality most of the parts are need to function. Sure you have some total [censored] departments. But sales can’t sell something if there is nothing made to sell, etc.

Most of the 30 years it seemed like it was just a thing we did and got paid for having a good time and helping a few people out. As I have gotten older I have come to understand how blessed I was to do things most people would not ever consider doing and doing them with a a bunch of bad as*es.

30 years as a fireman and 18 of it was in 3 of the busiest firehouses in the nation. It was fun being a fireman and I realized it was a young man's game and got out with some of my health.

Nothing like spending 1/3 of your life with great people in a frat house setting, lol. The fire service has changed so much over the years, but mostly the people that are drawn to serve are still fundamentally the same. You can leave $1M in cash and firemen will never touch a penny of it, but one will run up on your old lady quick, roflmao
