I'm also under the impression, California has some the best firefighters on the planet.
What exactly is holding the whole operation back?

For sure, Texas certainly has its wildfire problems, think back to 2011, Bastrop, PK, and a lot of TX had a terrible fire season.
Some areas are certainly safer from wildfires, but it starts with the homeowner, we can blame the govt all we want, but there is an awful lot we can do on our own to prevent our homes from burning down. There is a program called FIrewise, that can help educate folks, there is also money available to help protect your community from the risk of wildfire. Its usually one of those things "can't happen to me" until it happens.
I know in the spring of 2011 I responded to a wildfire down near Lake Livingston, it started behind a mans house, he had his burn pile going and had gone inside for a nap. well, after a 1200 ac. unthinned pine plantation had mostly burned down, we had the fire out. I can't remember what the forester out there said his timber co had lost, nearly a $1M of timber.
Got to be smart, and prepare. Its a matter of time before the west part of Austin (westlake/beecave area) get devestated by fire. It is nothing but one big cedar tree tinder block.

And it's reported. The mayor is currently in Africa.
Why?..Who'd paid for that?

There is absolutely nothing a firefighter can do if those Santa Ana winds align with the fuels and topography over there. They'll be working with dozers to burn out off ridges well away from the main fire. Not much fire hydranting going on haha

My niece lives in Sherman Oaks. Fires are seven miles away per local reporting. Work is keeping her in town...

Its January, a lot of our nations firefighting resources aren't available.
Also many of them called it quits because they were treated like turds.

I'm not saying that Trump is wrong, but California's wildfire problem runs much deeper than a political twitter rant.

Incorrect. Since the beginning of time, fires have prevented excessive build up of fuel, and regenerate the earth (which is good) California is a corrupt and incompetent state and has prevented residents from performing any brush or vegetation management for decades, which allows conditions that caused these current fires (which aren’t good). this is 100% true --- back in the nineties , PGE was heavily lobbied by liberal groups like Green Peace , Sierra club etc.... PGE wanted to cut back tree's 16 feet from all lines and transformers in Norcal . The liberal groups cried and cried --- they wanted 4 feet max (save the tree's !!) . The PUC ( public utilities commission ) ---which is supposed to protect consumers allowed the Cali Govt to fall to the liberal demands and PGE could only cut back 4 feet . Since PGE didnt have the funds to keep cutting back at a 4 foot distance --- eventually the tree's , lines and transformers came together and have been a direct cause of 9 of the last 10 major fires in Norcal ---. Hundres killed , billions in damage ---all to " save the tree's " PGE rates have tripled , Insurance companies have been doubling every 5 years and Newsom keeps blaming climate change . In SoCal , people keep building in "desert" area's and planting tree's that aren't native . Eventually they burn when the Santa Ana winds blow . Ever see a Eucalyptus tree explode ?? They have so much oil in them they explode when fires hit so fast .

I can recall working a fire right off a major highway in North Central California around 2005. It was later found out that an arson had started it, he was more of a serial arsonist. He started his fires along the road by lighting those firecrackers that resemble tanks. The ones that kind of roll on little cardboard wheels before blowing up.
That fire was later in the season, in big timber, ive never seen quite so much destruction in a forest. The dead standing trees had fallen and bured completely. Stumps and roots had burned completely, You had to be careful walking because you could fall into stump holes some of which were 4-8 feet deep full of hot ash.
The law had some sort of tracker on his car, and they had connected him with several other fires in the area, but it didnt matter, he committed suicide, they found him dead in his car not far away.
California is a complex wildland fire environment full of all sorts of political and other challenges. Nevermind the poison oak.
Its best to avoid.

Seems like a lot of these fires are started by arsonists or careless people.
