Has anybody identified this snake? The pictures don't show the top very well and I have no idea what it is. Regardless it has very striking markings.

The way it was trying to get on the boat makes me think it's a land dwelling snake and not a typical water snake. Maybe it's a rat/chicken boat snake.

On average, your heart beats 100,000 times a day. One day, one of those heartbeats will be your last. Then what?

Crikey Carl-------It must be all the rain we've had but I have seen allot of snakes on LA lately. They even come right up on me while I'm putting the boat in or taking it out.
Oh and Pappy---You let one of those on your boat and post to us how it turned out. As for me--I know how it would turn out--with me giving the snake the keys to the boat and then changing my pants!!!

glad you survived this vicious attack from this evil serpent from hell. :P
next time if you don't want to grab it with your hand you can make a snare out of any fishing rod in the boat by cutting off your lure and tying the line to the secong eye and fold it thru the tip to make a loop. slip it over the evil serpent of doom and just reel it up till its snug and move him where ever you please. Generally if you snare them and mess with them for a minute(swish him around in the water or bump his head into a couple trees) then when you let him go he will go away and leave you alone. I recomend 15 - 20lb line for good snare if you only have light line 4-6lb i would just use the snare to drag it around but not try to lift the attacker.

Never thought about the snare rig before..good idea. I have tried the screaming like a little girl trick before but it did not work. I nearly had one fall in the boat last week and made a noise that I have never produced before. I think it was a cross between a throwing up noise and an Elk call. Either way I would not have been able to collect myself enough to grab it.

I posted this in the Crappie section as well. Someone there suggested it's a rat snake.
