We fished Cedar Creek the past two mornings from 8 AM to 2 PM, focusing on deadsticking for Hybrids and Whitebass. The bite was steady, and the fish are definitely moving deeper. We're seeing them now in the 30-45 ft range, suspending at depths between 22-29 ft.

One thing I've noticed is that on cloudy, rainy, or misty days, the fish are also active under the birds, especially on flats. Water temperatures are currently between 54-56 degrees, which seems to be a sweet spot for these species.

For rig setups, deadsticking with 3-4 inch flukes has been the most productive method. If you spot birds, be sure to drop anything in your tackle box and make the most of the opportunity. The fish tend to be more aggressive when they're under the birds, so you can catch several before the action dies down.

The fishing should remain strong, with this pattern likely continuing throughout the winter months. Whether you're targeting Hybrids or Whitebass, the deep water and bird activity are key indicators to follow for success.

Today’s trip with Allen Womble and his buddy Gerry was nothing short of amazing—definitely one of the best days I’ve had on Cedar Creek in a long time!

The morning started off with rainy, misty conditions and a light SSW wind at 5-8 mph, but the weather warmed up quickly, and by mid-morning, the sun broke through. Water temperatures ranged from 54-56 degrees, and the action was non-stop from the moment we started until we wrapped up.

We spent the day deadsticking in depths between 32-45 ft, drifting along lake drop-offs and creek channels. The Hybrids and Whitebass were absolutely on fire. In total, we landed over 50 Hybrids and at least 125 Whitebass. All of the Hybrids were tagged and released to ensure they continue to thrive in the lake.

It was an incredible day of fishing, and the bite should remain strong as the season progresses.

Only keep a few if Clients swould like to keep them. Usualy keep whitebass and throw back the Hybrids so they can get bigger for the future.I also tag all the Hybrds and release them.

That's an excellent DS day on any lake! Reminds me of the good ole days DSing on Tawakoni. I did DS yesterday noon to 5pm on Tawakoni. Same water temp range. Fish did follow but mostly juvenile white bass. It amazes me that both ladies are not that far apart and one turns on anh not the other. Doh!

Congrats of a great day, Brent! cheers

Brent, I need all the DS help I can get. Some questions:
1. Did you use a thumper, splasher, or both?
2. What drift speed worked?
3. It looked like you used a slab with a jig above it. At what depth did you drag it?
4. Did you use your live-scope to assist, and if so, how important was it to your success?

Thanks in advance for your help! Dennis

Dennis,

First off, let's make plans to get out together this winter for the deadstick bite!

Here are the answers to your questions:

I always use both rods while deadsticking.
I typically drift at speeds between 0.2 to 0.5 mph.
I don't use slabs—just a 3/4 oz to 1 oz jig with a fluke (depending on wind speed). I also use a jig or a fluke above the main jig.
I always rely on Active Target when deadsticking—it's absolutely crucial for success!
Looking forward to hitting the water with you soon!

Sounds all to familiar here west of the Metro-Mess. River fed impoundments have not been good to our group in some time !!

The Hybrid and Whitebass bite on Cedar Creek has been nothing short of exceptional this December. With water temperatures ranging from 53-55 degrees, the fishing has been consistent and exciting.

Early mornings are best for chasing birds over shallow flats, where the action is fast and furious. As the day progresses, the fish are moving deeper, and deadsticking in 40-50 ft of water has been productive. Hybrids and Whitebass are suspending at depths of 18-28 ft throughout the lake.

We’ve been catching Whitebass up to 15 inches and 2.5 lbs, and Hybrids up to 24 inches. It’s an incredible time to be out on the water, with lots of action to keep you busy.

I still have a few dates available in January and February if you want to experience this thrilling bite for yourself!
