After living in Texas my whole life and having tried BBQ in several other states I will throw my pick on Texas being the best. That said I am getting tired of the briskets where a heavy seasoned bark is considered the best. It was not always that way and thinking back on some great BBQ growing up the brisket was not really about a thick dark bark. I am trying to remember when that was becoming a thing. It has become very popular, and I would like to find some that was cooked as I remember it from 30-40 years ago. The over barking, over seasoning it horrible. Caked pepper that leaves a nasty taste in your mouth for hours.

It was the Elders of the church that'd cook brisket. They would cook it for 8 hours overnight for Christmas dinner. Using a pure wood offset fire. The meat was in a chamber. The fire had a brick sized hole way into the main part. Turned every hour, sauce basted while in foil.
They also had to make chopped brisket for the even older folks that had no teeth. So it had to be soft.

both alabama and georgia have some really good bbq.... Alabama is the country’s absolute WORST “bbq” followed closely by Florida and Georgia. only a yankee would make an uniformed smart azz comment like that....(however I don't recall ever eating at or hearing about a good BBQ place in Florida)... both alabama and georgia have some really good bbq.... I’ve enjoyed BBQ all over the country, Memphis has some nice BBQ as well as Kansas City. but nothing tops TX, in terms of best region in Texas? I think there are shining stars in every region.

My earlier answer was based on people per capita who know how to use a smoker well to create bbq I prefer….not based on bbq restaurants.

While we’re on the subject, I’ve had Black’s BBQ in Lockhart multiple times and each time the brisket was dry and average at best.

Just my opinion, it wasn’t all that many years ago East Texas didn’t really have good BBQ. And the good ones are still few and far between compared to South Texas.
I traveled the state with my job a lot. Not sure I ever had good BBQ in West Texas. The worst I ever had was in Amarillo. Only good BBQ I ever had in Oklahoma was Bob’s BBQ in Ada, Oklahoma and they closed many years ago.
I lived in Corpus quite a few years, good BBQ in South Texas. Country Tavern, Stanley’s and Bodacious have been in East Texas for many years. Plus Sheps, Mike's, Stacy's was great but it's gone now. Those were great traditional BBQ places as baby Jesus intended. They didn't need prime or even choice brisket, they weren't Craft places, they don't roll their pants up at bottom and try and look like Franklin.....what alot of bbq today has turned into is a freaking joke. Coles in Fairfield is proper too while I'm thinking outloud When you are driving towards SE Texas on 175, in Cuney there is a shack by the side of the road, ithey made “backyard” BBQ. And and it’s very good, brisket is usually served with the flavor on. Old man Stacy was a great host, his sons not so much. I ate there every Tuesday for 16 years.coming home from Rusk or Lufkin.

He raved about how it was authentic Texas BBQ We had been out there about 3 weeks so so and some home cooking sounded good. We stopped by there. First clue was ZERO smoke smell on the place. Needless to say it wasn't anything like Texas BBQ. It was incredibly bland. We are batting about .500 on the places we have tried that were featured on DDD. We've tried 8-10 places. Best DDD place we tried is Crushcraft Thai in Dallas. That place has been awesome every single time.

Just because you started something doesn’t mean it can’t be improved.
I don’t care what yal stuff your tacos and tamales with. Just don’t call it bbq. Call it some hipster way of adding to much seasoning and ashtray to a piece of meat. Unlike you, I have had both and just stating facts. There is 16 counties in southern Ky and northern Tn that will have you stepping over the best Texas brisket you will ever eat. Just like Johnny Cash said, “do what you do do well,boy”, stuff that chit in tacos. Come eat real bbq over here, hell we the ones taught you how to cook anyway.
