Texas by far has the best BBQ. Not sure why they added NM though. Can't really recall ever getting g decent BBQ there unless you count Powdrell's or the Rudy's location in Albuquerque.
I'm not a fan of the KC style stuff. California has tri tip but they don't seem to do much else very good. Pulled pork in the Carolinas and in TN is always worth a taste though.
The two places I've tried in Oklahoma make me not want to try a 3rd.
Also anyone basing the ranking of Texas BBQ from its sauce probably has not tried the right Texas BBQ. All Bucees BBQ will be different because they contract with local BBQ places to provide it in the store.

Every time he comes home the first thing he request is BBQ. His exact words before coming home….. “when I’m home can we get BBQ, because this stuff up here is trash and the locals think it’s good”.

Texas BBQ is the best. In Texas, Central Texas BBQ is the best. In Central Texas, there are several pits that are too close to call a winner.
There are some decent places around DFW.

If you don’t know any better whatever you’ve had is the best you’ve ever seen. I get a lot of out of state people riding with me. One of the high priority things is to take them somewhere at least proper. Even Rudy’s beats anything they’ve seen. Until you know, you’ll never change your opinion. I had an engineer a few years ago who was from North Carolina. Actually decided he had to lip off about over rated Texas bbq. I took him to Louie Mueller in Taylor. He doesn’t lip off anymore.

Just my opinion, it wasn’t all that many years ago East Texas didn’t really have good BBQ. And the good ones are still few and far between compared to South Texas.
I traveled the state with my job a lot. Not sure I ever had good BBQ in West Texas. The worst I ever had was in Amarillo. Only good BBQ I ever had in Oklahoma was Bob’s BBQ in Ada, Oklahoma and they closed many years ago.
I lived in Corpus quite a few years, good BBQ in South Texas.
Thanks, Billy

Like everywhere, Oklahoma has some top notch bbq. You just have to know where to go. Plenty of duds in every state.

After living in Texas my whole life and having tried BBQ in several other states I will throw my pick on Texas being the best. That said I am getting tired of the briskets where a heavy seasoned bark is considered the best. It was not always that way and thinking back on some great BBQ growing up the brisket was not really about a thick dark bark. I am trying to remember when that was becoming a thing. It has become very popular, and I would like to find some that was cooked as I remember it from 30-40 years ago.

Best BBQ I have ever had is the Rendezvous in Memphis Tenn. used to go there back in 70's and their st louis (dry style) ribs were great but I've heard the quality isn't as good as it once was....Dreamland ribs in Tuscaloosa and Smokey Pig sandwiches in Phenix City are the best I've ever had....

both alabama and georgia have some really good bbq.... Alabama is the country’s absolute WORST “bbq” followed closely by Florida and Georgia. only a yankee would make an uniformed smart azz comment like that....(however I don't recall ever eating at or hearing about a good BBQ place in Florida)...

I like Dry Rub Ribs that I have to chew the meat of the bone with Spicy sauce on the side. My best ever was Dreamland in Tuscaloosa AL.

Those were great traditional BBQ places as baby Jesus intended. They didn't need prime or even choice brisket, they weren't Craft places, they don't roll their pants up at bottom and try and look like Franklin.....what alot of bbq today has turned into is a freaking joke. Coles in Fairfield is proper too while I'm thinking outloud
