Love to fish some ponds, most are over run with small fish, fish biologist told a friend that built a new 2 acre tank and stocked with Florida strain blacks to keep bass thinned out to allow them to get big, said eat them,or feed them to the coons. Stock with blue gill helps a lot.

Most private lake owners drastically underestimate how much a bass eats. It takes 10# of bait to add one pound of bass per year after year one. If you don't get your bluegill & shad established in your pond a year before you add the bass you will always be behind the curve.

Many pond owners stock bluegill & bass at the same time because they don't have the discipline to stock the bluegill and feed them heavily for the first year before they ever add a single fingerling bass. Even doing this you need to aggressively cull the smaller bass every year or you will wind up with a pond full of stunted 1.5# bass.

We have taken 100lbs a year out of our 30acre lake for the last 4 years and are finally seeing it work. We still catch a lot of 2lb fish but the mix is getting better.

At a private pond I fish, I double gill anything under 14 inches and release them in deeper water. My thought is that they now became food for the bigger bass in the 15 acre pond.

We let our baitfish thrive for 3yrs before we added bass.

I like fishing ponds with a bunch of 14 inchers. I would rather catch 50 of those than 10 3 pounders, but I know everyone is different. I did get to fish a private pond once that was LOADED with 3-7 pounders, that was a blast! But if I owned a pond I dont know if I would have the patience needed to grow it the right way....

Thats the way to do it if you can make yourself wait. How is your lake level holding up?
