The only difference between years ago and now in Mexico is which side of the law is worse...

I used to be a Border Patrol Agent in Nogales, AZ and would see convoys of bass boats heading south into Mexico. Knowing what I did about what was going on around there I could only think they were out of their minds going south to fish. You all who went were lucky to make it back unscathed! You will never catch me in Mexico after what I have seen in the last 20 years!

That’s a long paragraph but it seems like a guy from San Antonio was driving through Mexico in a new suburban and got carjacked. Was he going to see his wife or going fishing? Did he catch anything?

Jimbo doesn’t live in San Antonio he lives on his ranch in Del Rio. He also has a place near Falcon. He fishes every full moon from October thru April in Mexico. He keeps his boat at his wife’s place in Hermosillo. He hires a guide from Maziltan to fish with him on every trip, so yes he catches fish. He smokes Cuban cigars and loves tequila. Every trip into Mexico he stays at least a week with his wife.
And even though he lives near both Amiistad and Falcon he doesn’t like fishing at those places. He said he will buy him an old beat up vehicle to drive back and forth.

LOL...he's going BACK to fish there again? Isn't there a joke about the guy going to the house of ill repute, knocks on the door, and tells the guy thru the little opening, "I want to get laid!" Guy says, "slip $100 in the slot". Our guy does and waits about 15 minutes...nothing. He pounds on the door and the guy on the other side of the door says, "WHAT"? Our guy: "hey, I put $100 in the slot...I wanna get fuc*ed"! Guy says, "AGAIN?"

Just talked to some guys from Phoenix that I keep up with, they go down there monthly as well. They love to hear these stories because it deters everyone else from going down there.
Guy named Leo owns a funeral home in Phoenix. He drives a new Lincoln Navigator and pulls his Caymas down there about 12 trips a year. He just insures it and says WTF I'm going fishing.

Not unless things change. We have already started planning 2025 going to Minnesota, or Canada.

I have always chuckled at the safety in numbers idea when it comes to Mexico. No one in that convoy can carry a gun. What are they going to do, face guys armed with automatic weapons with their fists? A convoy is just more people to rob.

Do yourself a favor if you haven't already. Drive a few hours further and stay somewhere around Henderson Harbor on Lake Ontario in NY. Easy access to the St. Lawrence and on a calm day can be at the Duck islands in Canada in about 20-25 minutes. Catch it right and its 50+ smallmouth a day up to 7+ pounds with countless 4-5's. Best part about this area is that if the wind is blowing (doesn't take much) you can still fish the river and the entire harbor protected. That's not the case in a lot of the lakes in MN and WI unless you are talking back bays for walleye and pike. I've done this trip every year for the last 6 in early August. It's crazy fun.
