Hey guys , I'm new to surf fishing and I hope to get some help from the more seasoned surf fishermen. I fly my rig out by drone to about 200 meters and I have 65 lb. braided
line. The problem I'm having is the line keeps breaking. I don't know if there is something in the surf that the line is rubbing on in the surf or what. I'm looking to you more seasoned folks to give me some suggestions on what is the best braided line for this style of fishing.

Sand is hard on braided line. The conventional wisdom is to use a monofilament topshot. Lately some of the landbased shark anglers have been using hollowcore braid, and some without the topshot; it's apparently not as susceptible to the sand's abrasion. I can't say from personal experience if that's true; I use hollowcore with a monofilament topshot. Another advantage of the hollowcore is that you can use knotless splices to attach more line or a monofilament topshot.

At 200 meters, your line is pulled tight over one or even two sand bars. Then the wind and wave action is pulling your line back and forth over them like sandpaper. Perhaps allow a little slack in your line, and look for something less susceptible to sand abrasion.

Thanks guys, That info. will help me a lot. I'm thinking of maybe putting about a 100 ft. mono topshot on the braid. Do you guys think thats to long?

I'd go longer if I could. I use about 250 yds. of 100# mono over 1500 yds. of 100# hollowcore

Thanks guy for all the helpful info. I had one more question. If you have that much mono run out into the water how do you get the stretch out of all that mono without pulling your weight out of the sand? I use a 8 ounce spider weight. With all that mono out there
how can you tell if you are getting bit?

Sorry, been out of town and missed the last question. A shark will generally pick up the bait and run with it a way. You’ll know.

BFINE all good advise above. Surf fishing, your target species are usually large fish. If there is weak link in your set up, a large shark will take full advantage of it. If you are tying knots, you need to make sure your knots are well tied. You may want to consider crimps instead of knots. How long are your leaders? You cannot use short leaders especially when dealing with sharks. Where is your line parting? A mono top shot as mentioned above will probably take care of your break offs. Best of luck to you.
