What a rip off.

Just had a guy out to quote me on an acrylic shower for the guest bathroom. Thought it would be cheaper than tile. Its not as nice but you know, its a guest shower that is rarely used.

Figured convert the tub to walk in shower, put in a new plastic drop in basin, throw some panels up, no glass just a shower curtain is fine... they can do it in one day, its that easy.

I was thinking 3-5k. NOT!

$18K

The guy was super nice and used about 8 different sales tactics which I kind of stopped by saying, "Look Adam, if you removed the "one" from the front of that number I would still think it was too much... Sometimes the gap is too big and thats fine..."

Dang, Seventeen Thousand. Not a full bath remodel, again that was JUST the wet space.

What's making it $17 grand? The supplies or labor?

That's nuts.

IDK I did not look that hard even. I zoned out fast when he said that number. He said he was going to email the bid, but I have not got it yet.

He said, "Think of it as $200 a month not the total." I says to him, "Adam I do not think that way bub".

I had the master done, in real tile, with glass, and a whole new tile floor built, much larger space for 40% less than his quote for a acrylic in lay and plastic floor pan.

He said in 2020 (he has been doing this for 10 years) that this job would have been 9-10K. Which I still would have thought was too much for not getting real tile and a real tiled pan...

Inflation and such I guess.

Sounds like a three weekend DIY for under $2k.

True that.

I'd add up the cost looking at Lowe's or Home Depot. That's where he's most likely getting his stuff. See what kind of crazy markup he's trying to get away with.

Finance it? Yeah, he can stick that.

We got our entire master bathroom, including redoing the entire shower (removing jacuzzi tub, custom glass, a lot of tile work), adding shelves, paint, electrical, new countertop and floor done for about that much. It took two weeks. This was several years ago (pre-Covid) but still. A one day job, just replacing a shower like you described, seems ludicrous.

Dude call or text me! We do them all the time. It’s a very popular thing to do now especially with parents moving in with the kids now days. 17k is ridiculous for sure. Sounds like Anderson Windows quoting 80 to 100k for windows!

Dan Dan, I'll come up there and do it for $16,999. That's a $466 saving and I'll use real tile too! Truly a $1000 upgrade in value!

We redid our master bathroom in 2021 and took out the old shower and installed a large tiled shower, put new tile in the bathroom, repainted the bathroom and it cost about what you were quoted. The shower that we put in is 8x8 with 2 showers on either side and a lipless walk-in if someone of us is in a wheelchair. Keep looking and asking, you’ll find someone to do it how you want it for the right price.

We redid our entire master bath in 2014 for under 15K. Everything was brand new. I know things have gotten more expensive but man that is a rip off for sure.

MTM in Mansfield could probably do stone for that price.

Keep looking for the right contractor.
