Rough day. The river is way down due to our continued drought. Our usual creek where we cast net for shad is now too shallow for us to get the boat into. So off to catch our favorite backup bait, bluegill. Earlier this fall we switched from nightcrawlers to small cut pieces of Berkley's Gulp minnows in the chartreuse and white color. Less messy and a small cut piece of it will catch several fish. On Dennis' second cast he hooked into this 14lb blue. The perchjerker rod he was using had a #8 Mosquito hook and 6lb test line. It took him over 30 minutes before we could get it into the net.
For once the weatherman made an accurate forecast. The winds did pickup with gusts to over 25mph. We moved to several places and were eventually forced to move to the base of a cliff which blocked us from the wind and I had marked numerous fish. It didn't take long for Dennis to catch blue #2, this 15 lb'er.
Those fish I marked? Turns out it was gar. We used the remainder of our bait and had fun watching our rods go down with gar bites.
50% or greater chance to rain both Saturday and Sunday, so we are skipping the catfish chase this weekend.
