I planted onions yesterday. Two bunches of Texas Legends and one bunch of Red Creole.

Got my Dixondale onions in last Tuesday, got the garden tilled under one more time Wednesday evening before all the snow, I'll wait to plant till the new moon in two weeks. Granny Welcher always said to plant onions at the new moon cycle.

Call me envious!

hey Welcher, that's a new one for me; plant on new moon; i always check Farmers Almanac advise, and now i'm adding this; what other gardening advise did Granny give you;

that's a box of onions, nice size; i buy mine as soon as available in November; they're small but grow; today is the 3rd time i'll add 21-0-0, a cup per 20ft until March 1st; try a test row;

Got the asparagus beds cut down and composted yesterday.



The front two are 25 plus years old and still producing. The back two are 1 year old and 3 years old. I will harvesting sparingly from the 3 year old bed and the 1 year old bed will fern out unharvested for another year.

I tried asparagus once and failed miserably. I may try it again because I love it.

I bought two more of the 17" tall Vego metal garden beds to replace my land scape timber beds. They rot out too after about five years. I still have to get all the bermuda grass and the nutsedge grass. I'll put that dirt on the bottom and fresh new dirt with compost on the top.

While onion plants can handle temperatures as low as 20˚F, the length of time they are exposed to freezing conditions is critical. Snow can actually benefit your plants by acting as an insulator, keeping ground temperatures steady at 32˚F. However, ice or dry freezes can be more damaging, especially if temperatures dip below 20˚F for over 14 hours.

Once the freeze passes, it’s essential to support your plants' recovery. Apply water and a nutrient boost, such as ammonium sulfate, to help them regain strength. Check for signs of recovery, like new leaves emerging, which indicate that the plant is on its way back. Larger, well-established plants are more likely to withstand freezing conditions than smaller ones with weaker root systems. If your plants show white tops or the bulbs become mushy, unfortunately, they didn’t survive.

If your onion plants have weathered the freeze, they may still experience stress-related changes, such as bolting, where seed stems appear. While this can affect the bulb size, bolted plants are still usable and can be harvested earlier to minimize loss. To prevent future stress, maintain consistent care by watering thoroughly before freezes, monitoring for damage, and providing nutrients during recovery.

Prepare for future freezes: To minimize the risk of freeze damage in the future, plan ahead by keeping protective coverings, such as tarps or frost blankets, on hand. Cultivate the soil to create a moist insulating layer before a hard freeze and water your onions thoroughly to retain ground warmth.
