We have about 2100 sq. ft under AC here in a home built in the late 60s.
Our highest electric bill this year has been the last one covering half of August and half of Sept. It was $172.05. Thermostat is usually set at 77 or 78 degrees in the summer.
In the winter (with gas heat) our biggest bill was $73.16.
We are on a contract that the charges are 09.06 cents/ kw. That was $104,62 last month. Oncor charges last month were $60.64. The balance were a few charges for tax and some other miniscule fee.
About 15 years ago we had the interior of the roof sprayed with radiant barrier and added a bunch of extra insulation to the attic. That same year we installed a new AC unit that is really energy efficient. Our electric bill dropped like a rock and has stayed there since.
Family is everything! Life is precious. We don’t have forever. We have now. This moment. We can choose to love our lives now.

I don't know why most roofs in Texas are dark colors. Brown, grey, reddish. Nothing bright white except for metal roofs on barns and shops. If this house had a white roof. The temps wouldn't be anywhere near what they are now.
It'd be like those folks who stick a lawn sprinkler on the roof to cool it down. Spending in water what they saved on electricity.

I couldn’t imagine not turning on the AC in my home just to save a few bucks.

I couldn’t imagine not turning on the AC in my home just to save a few bucks. On a fixed income, you can and you will. But I'm not the average. I simply do not mind the heat. So I'm lucky. Neighbors to my side. They're both fat. Really fat. Their AC doesn't stop running. They have to be section 8. Bills supplemented or something.

You already mentioned you don’t work…if I were that strapped for cash, didn’t have a job, and had to keep my house at 85 degrees…I’d be walking down the street to McDonald’s and getting a part time job so I could afford AC

I do not think we have used less than 3000 KWh since like May. If it were just me I would prob use 500 a month, but I am not going to brow beat my family about being comfortable in our home.

Somehow my kWh rate is ~22¢ (small print on the paper bill. One year contract for 15¢).... It sounds like the total fees on your electric bill weren’t fully explained when you signed up. In Texas, electric bills include the electricity rate, charges from the Utility Distribution Company (UDC) or Transmission and Distribution Utility (TDU), and taxes. The rate you were quoted might not have covered all these additional costs. With over 100 Retail Energy Providers (REPs) in Texas, plus energy brokers and aggregators, understanding all the charges is crucial—whether you're managing a household budget or overseeing a large operation with complex energy needs. If you're dealing with commercial contracts or need help navigating these options, feel free to reach out via DM. I specialize in data center, tech, and manufacturing growth and work with a large aggregator and broker. I’d be happy to assist. A lot of the contracts have a minimum kWh usage before you can hit the rate. Go under and the rate is higher.

I think we are better off selling our places in Texas and living in mud huts in a 3rd world country. No more electric or gas bill to worry about. 3rd World counties have power to mud huts but they use a fan

Change plans to a different provider, I changed yesterday, rates down around .10 cents per KW now, I rarely use less than 3,000kw’s during the summer and up to 4,000 so a little change saves me a lot.

Between $150.00 and $175.00 per month during the summer. Fall and winter it is usually between $50.00 and $70.00 per month. Thermostat is set at 75 during the summer!
