Going to give it a shot this weekend since I'll be up that way. I've never fished it, never been by it, have no clue what to expect. I'll have the boat.

What kind of information can y'all provide me with on this place? I've heard it's a good lake to fish. Any baits that work well here that I need to pick up? Is the lake wide open to run?

Loaded with grass and reeds. Outside edges early will get some good ones. You can flip the reeds and pick up a few. If you have FFS get out to the middle of a creek and you'll find em after the morning bite slows down a bit. Texas rigs or jigs around the grass and reeds. And you do realize it's Labor Day weekend...right? Be prepared for Idiocracy.

Wasn't this the lake the dam blew out and all the water drained?

That was Lake Dunlap.

Walter E Long or Decker Lake was closed because of drought until earlier this year.

Dunlap is back open! Have not fished it since the dam broke. Plan on fishing it again next year! thumb

Awesome, thanks for this. Sounds pretty similar to Bastrop. Is the lake wide open to run around?

And yes, I’m aware it’s Labor Day. Just like everyone else, it’s a weekend that gives me a bit more time to fish. I’m going to be up that way regardless so might as well give it a shot since I’ll be down the road from it

lake is full of grass and lily pads. in the summer the grass gets insane, but i have not been in awhile. It's one of the best fishing lakes in Texas IMO for quality of bass. There's no structure other than grass. you can run wide open anywhere you want. I prefer the right arm of the lake. About mid way up the right arm there's a little indentation and that's my honey pot. caught the best fish there. just start there and fish up from there and fish the bank. I've NEVER found them deep there. The intake area is very popular also but i've never had that much luck there. The Dam/Spill way area is pretty good fishing.

since it's a holiday weekend for most people, the lake can get pretty rowdy with lots of people that do not speak english and love to drink and act like fools. I've seen cars parked on and blocking the boat ramp before, where i had to ask people to move their cars so i can get my boat out of the water. I would brush up on your spanish.

Awesome info, thank you.

So is the water level okay right now?

from looking at recent fishing reports on facebook, the water level is fine. Here's the good spot i was talking about. I have not fished the lake this year, but i've fished it every week multiple times for years. Since there's a lot of weeds, i usually use a chatter bait, wacky rig, or fluke. [Linked Image]

Fished out there this morning.

It was so-so. I got a few small bites early on a Texas rigged brush hog. Lost one at the boat on a frog by the discharge.
Caught one that was right at 5.5lbs in the upper end of the right arm. Caught him on a Texas rigged bubblegum trick worm of all things. VERY NICE and healthy fish. One more in that same area around 1-2lbs and that was it.

There wasn’t many people out there at all. No wake boats running around or nothing. Was pretty peaceful and quiet. My family and I are staying at the south shore park on Bastrop, not many people here either. Very strange.

I wouldn’t rush back up there to Decker but it was nice. That ramp is a terrible design. Barely made it up the ramp on the way out. You’d think they’d at least groove that pavement before that steep [censored] drop off.

Also, one of the guys I was talking to out there on the lake said it was closing down to boats soon? How true is this?

I mentioned it above, because I thought they had already closed it. Supposed to do some dam work, but sounds like it’s in 2025.
