Hi, I live in south Howard County - west Texas on 11 acres. I have been feeding wild birds for around 4+ months and watching them out my window. I have about 25 blue quail, probably 35 or 40 whitewings / morning doves, and assorted sparrows and simlar size.
After the 1" rain last night, which we terribly needed, the damn fire ants washed in and have 3 mounds going already in less than 24 hours out where I feed the birds. I have Amdro fire ant killer but I'm wondering if any of the birds will eat those yellow Amdro bits and get sick or dead.
Not sure what else to do but I need to get those evil little bastages dealt with before they spread all over my place. Any knowledge will be greatly appreciated.
This is first I've seen them out here but I'm not going to worry about any out in the pasture as long as they stay out there. Thanks!

I don't think there is enough active ingredient in Amdro to hurt them. I had a horse eat three 1-pound bags a few years ago. didn't slow him down a bit.

I have numerous birds coming to my many feeder and I use Amdro as needed. I have seen no problems for the birds. From a quick google search.
The active ingredient in Amdro Fire Ant Killer for Mounds™ is hydramethylnon which has very low toxicity to people, animals and birds. When used according to the label we wouldn't expect any problems to your pets.

I’ve been at war with fire ants for a long time.
When killing ants you know what I want to see? Dead ants.
When you use over and out with water you’ll get a big pile of dead ants. Every thing else seems to just move them around.
I hate those vermin.

Thanks guys for the info on the old school Amdro! I know that stuff works and works well. I'm all about organic but I don't have compost tea and the other stuff that Howard Garret uses in his method.
I have some of the Nagasaki grade Amdro left and will go after them with that. Mine is old and been in a hot sea container for a while but will see if it still works.
Naturally WalMart in town doesnt have the good stuff. Some yuppy looking Amdro carp that supposed to kill fire ants but not the same ingredient in the old school white jug that works so well. My brother found some on Ebay and ordered 2 jugs. They're washing up into his front lawn. He's about 5 miles closer to town and there's a big pasture right across the road they are washng out of into his yard. For years, we never had them around here. Apparently those days are long gone.
Thanks everyone for helping me.

Glad to see Big Spring and Howard County getting rain Me and you both brother. I swear it's been over 2 months since we had more than a tenth here and there. The deer are skinny and their rib cages are showing badly. I have a water tank about 30 yds outside my window I keep full for them but they come mostly at night. Hardly any browse that is not brown and crunchy. I've seen them munching on Mesquite leaves some. The dirt is literlally like flour where there is no vegitation. I see them eating stuff but it must not be very nutritious. Maybe this little shower will get some filaree going. I don't shoot these, I just like watching them. I have other places nearby to kill a nice tasty doe if I want some venison. I'd like to find something to feed the deer besides corn. I'm not worrying about big racks - just something to put some meat on their bones. If we have a really cold winter again, I expect some of them won't make it.
